Remington model 700 VL SS or Savage model 12 BTCSS Varmint
I've decided that i' going to buy a .204 in the next month or two but can't decide which gun to go with. I want a brown laminate thumbhole stock with stainless barrel, and I've narrowed my decision down to these two guns. I'm still stuck though and can't decide on which one to go with? Any opinions or personal experiences would be appreciated. Also, i can get the Savage for $835 and the Remington for $850. So the prices don't play any part in my decision because of the small difference.

Welcome to the forum Jarred
The three smallest aggs in the last 204 Challenge were shot by stock Savages
Did you know that with a $35 wrench you can remove that Savage barrel in your own home and replace it with another in just about any cartridge you want, factory or custom. Now that right there is worth the price of admission.

Savage VLP + NF 12x42 + 35 Bergers = .

First of all welcome to the forum! I love my Remington VLSS. But remember opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one! I think that the fit and finish on the Remington is superior to the Savage but you will find others that will say otherwise. The best thing to do is to find a dealer who has both and play with them. Accuracy should be very good with either one. I for one don't like the Savage trigger as well as some other things. But you should do want floats your boat not mine! Gary

My bud has the Savage in 22-250 and MAN it's a heavy gun! It's a shooter but I wouldn't want to carry it in the field. I like my trigger on my VSSF II.

I was in a similar situation several months ago. Initially, I was interested in a Savage. I have two of their 17 HMR's and I couldn't ask for better rifles. Then I saw the Remington. I ended up with a Remington because it was on sale and thus a tad cheaper than the Savage so I went with it.
WRT Savage, the only thing I would have preferred it had would have been a floor plate. I was a little surprised because I know they make models with floor plates and I thought this one would have had it.
In the end, I think you'll be happy either way.
Jim

Savage...... then you can always get the the wrench and headspace guages and change to a different round or twist
It does not take a majority to prevail, but rather an irate, tireless minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of men....
