About 12 years ago, Missouri's Dept. of Conservation got a windfall from the legislature, they get 1/8 of 1% of the sales tax generated in the state. That's a LOT of money, but I opposed such a thing. Those chickens are coming home to roost, of course. It seems treehuggers and birdwatchers, who were getting a free ride, are now wanting THEIR money spent for THEIR own purposes (and that's a natural occurrence, right?), and MODOC is getting infiltrated by treehuggers and folks who know NOTHING about hunting and fishing, and want to follow Kalifornia's lead on lead abatement, among other things. It's a big mess, they took a very smart and progressive Conservation Dept. and have politicized it, and naturally, with the economy stalling a bit, now the legislature is thinking of ways to spend MODOC's money, like requiring MODOC to pay for deer/car accidents and such (guess who'd behind that, can you say State Farm, etc.?)
It's a pickle. I can't see anything but downhill ride from here.
