open reed call protection

I recently found a "family pack" of Quaker Boy open reed howlers on sale. This is the first set of open reed calls I own, and immediately was concerned about the plastic reed getting damaged in my field pack.

Are there any effective methods for keeping the reed from damage during transit and storage without compromising the "factory settings" of the call?

I use old pill bottles to carry my Crit'r calls. It works real well. One bottle fits one call. I label the bottle and they are easy to find in my bag and identify.

A college friend and I went out hunting the other night. . . . we set up in an old dairy barn at the farm where we expected to see El coyote! He had killed a doe the night before, and we used the hide and head as a drag to our location and set the ribcage out for extra lure.

We got set in the windows, I cut loose a nice bark bark haahooweeeeee. . . . . not 3 seconds later we got a reply 200yds out through the woods

My buddy is shooting a Rem .223 while I'm swinging my cammoed Savage mod 12 .204


We hear the dog making his way through the leaves. . . . 100yds or so. . . then BOOM ! !

A group of 4 guys hunting deer (with shotgun) tagged a doe running from the coyote we called in! #$%@%^*! They apparently didn't know we where there fore they were talking about hear the two coyotes!!!

To protect my open reed calls, I stole some of my wife's body spray caps. They didn't fit really well, but they did offer some protection.

Take one of your calls to the local auto parts store and get a section of clear plastic fuel line that fits over the open end and then cut small pieces that will extend past the tip. Punch a small hole in the tube and run a piece of small string through the hole to attach the piece of tube to the call so it doesn't get lost.

You can also buy some rubber bands like they make for braces for teeth and put one on the end. Also get a nice shotgun plastic reload box and if it's not to long you can put 25 to 50 in one box.
