Barnes Varmint Grenades and RL-7

Post by FireBallGuy »

Can't remember where I read that RL-7 is a great choice for use with VG's...is this so? Have the powder, have the bullets would like to have some nice short range laser beams at my disposal for the rest of the summer. Are there other options tht might work well with this bullet as well. After I have done my little experiment I will probably never buy them again but i have 300 of them just itching to get used. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In my .204 Ruger the 26 grain VG shoots best with 25.2 grains of RL-10x with a Remington 7-1/2 or Federal 205M primer, 2.260" OAL. .250" to .4" groups depending on wind and mirage. Velocity 4,085 fps average. RL-7 may be a bit fast for this combination.

In the .223 Remington the 36 grain VG uses 27.8 grains of TAC with a Remington 7-1/2 primer, 2.190" OAL. .5" to .75" groups in my old Remington 788.

The .22-250 likes the 50 grain VG (requires 1:10" twist) with 31.9 grains of Benchmark and a Winchester Large Rifle Primer. 2.350" OAL. .5" groups.

Seating depth is a deciding factor, these bullets need a jump to be accurate, if I seat the too close to the lands, accuracy falls way off. All the VG's are devastating on squirrels - especially the 50 grain .224.

30.2 grains BL-C2 under half in nosler 32 gr ballistic tip, 28.4 grains RL-10X 39 grain sierra blitzking under half inch and MANY loads using benchmark that will keep 5 shots well under a half inch for 5 shots. Got word back from remington my gun is shipping back to me today. When it arrives I have another round of test ammo ready to go. Using varmint grenades with benchmark, 35 grain bergers with benchmark and a little further work with ballistic tips and benchmark. My new VSF is HORRIBLY picky!! Have only got really good consistent results with benchmark and RL-10X and thus far sierra bullets both 32 and 39 grain. Will upload my results from thsi last test before the snow she flies!!
