I live in Idaho, and depending on what the Federal Judge in Montana says, we may or may not have a wolf season this fall.
So, I need to get started on load development. My intent right now is to work something up for the 204. The anticipated range is 200 to 300 yards. Don't really know of any information on how hardy the wolves are when it comes to absorbing bullet damage. Definitely don't wan't to wound one and have it run off, so I want a pretty good chance of a one shot kill.
Any body have any recommendations, on the suitability of the 204, bullets or loads?
Is the 204 suitable for wolves?

I REALLY like my 204, but I would want a larger caliber with more knockdown power. At least a 243/6mm or bigger would suffice. Wolf can be up to 180 pounds!!!

I agree with acloco, I would want something larger than a 204 for something that can go after you and kill you. Wolves normally do not travel alone and can hunt in large packs. I would want a 243 or larger caliber if it were me.
Please, no Sidewinder today!

As you probably know by now he just said it. Evidently the big city wolf lovers did a good job judge-shopping. The delisting is now on hold.I live in Idaho, and depending on what the Federal Judge in Montana says, we may or may not have a wolf season this fall.

Re: Is the 204 suitable for wolves?
I got a Ruger Hawkeye 204 Ruger that I will be toting this winter while checking the trapline and would not hesitate to take out a wolf if the chance arises this year. I also plan on using my 243 wssm as well, but I'm confident with both rifles.
I still have some more load development to do on the 204 and more bullets to play with.
