Idaho chucks

We got out yesterday for a day of chuck shooting. My buddy and I shot nine between us. We only got a picture of this one. It was a big fat one. He got it at 52 yds. with his 6/mm Rem. 73 gr. Barnes Verminator. It's a Ruger 77 tang safety, super accurate and he has named it the "Terminator". That was the closest one we shot, farthest one was around 250 yds. Here's a graphic picture.

Hey broper, I recognize that chuck! He must have wandered across the Orygun border into Idaho just for you and your buddy. Guess he won't be coming back any time soon either.

Seriously though, he really got smacked with that 6mm 73gr bullet at 52 yards....impact velocity must have been around 3,500 fps at that range! I'm surprised he looks that good. Did your buddy "get any on him"?

I wish we had a video camera, there were a couple others that did some pretty awsome aerobatics. That little Rugger is really impressive, I've watched him shoot coyotes, badgers, jack rabbits and ground squirrels with it. Even a 400 yd, shot on a badger. It's the most accurate Ruger 77 I've ever seen and to think, I sold it to him ! I was shooting my Rem. 788 .22/250. It's a very accurate gun also. I only managed to get one of the nine we shot. For some reason just about all of them appeared on his side. Happens that way some times. It was a very enjoyable day, lot's of sun, hardly any wind until late afternoon. Tons of fun.

Oh yeah ! A bad varmint hunting is always better than a god day working, even if I am retired. The way I look at it, any time you can get out and hunt varmints is a good day even if you don't shoot any. We have a badger hunt/shoot coming up next month. Hopefully I'll have some pictures then.

Haven't had a chance at one for a year or two. Had a double the last time we were out for praire dogs. Pic confirmed one of the two. The second one did the Hokey Pokey down his hole. No pic

I should add that this photo goes back a ways. Now days you do not see them very often, except over on the Nv side of the sage areas.

That's definitely a Biggun' there Bill. Nice looking summer coat on the guy. Have always been amazed with Badgers. But hate having them dig a whole big enough to break the rear axle of a 25,000 lb combine. Been there done that.

Yes they can really cause equipment issues for the rancher/farmer. That is why most all of them want them taken out of their fields whenever possible. He was a very nice big male. Bill K

Looks like Secret Code and Bill got into the BIG diggers. Looks like we switched gears from chucks to badgers along the way. Okay then, here's a recent one taken with my 11-twist 204 and a 32gr NBT at just over 200 yards in the rat patch:



Here's a reason to always have a handgun on you while in the outback. Normally it would have been my Kimber Ultra .45, but when in the rat patch it usually wears a Kimber .22LR conversion, stoked with WW Power Point HP's. Which work quite well on tough old boar badgers.....



Chucks, badgers, sage rats, whatever, we've got hardware to cover all comers!

Yep, I like shooting them all. I have shot a few with my .204, mostly with 40 gr. V-Maxes but the 32 gr. Nosler Varmageddon works really well to. I shot one 30 pounder with my .218 Bee at 111 yds. 40 gr. V-Max went in the right ear and out the left ear. That was a huge badger. Should have had it mounted.
