Hornady neck sizing die returned

Post by robert w. »

I sent my .22 neck sizing die back to hornady.
You tighten the spindle lock ,the spindle isnt centered.
Replacement arrived today. Guess what? The spindle is bent.
They shipped it well packaged.the spindle was retracted into the body so it didnt get bumped in transit.
I wish now i got rcbs neck sizer dies.looked at my 204r neck sizer die and its way off the center.
Anybody else have troubles with hornady neck sizing dies?

Robert, about any die that has a decapper will appear to have the decapper off center. This is the reason we always leave the lock nut loose so the decapping rod will self-center when withdrawn from the case, thereby not pulling the neck out of concentricity.

Nothing new here.

Thanks, I learned something today. I wasn't aware of the trick to leave the lock nut loose. As a retired aircraft mechanic I was always taught if it's loose, tighten it. Randy.

I am not sure how Rick does it Randy. But just for info, after I have the de-capping rod set for the proper length to just take out the primer, I turn the nut down to just touch the die body, with little or no pressure and it allows the rod to wriggle and center on it's own. Often I do this same procedure with any of the center rods on various dies that I use. Bill K :)

I run my casings through a primer removal die then put the casings in my cleaner.i dont use the primer stud on neck sizing. I want my brass clean before i size, but thats me. Knock primers out tumble inspect for cracks and damage clean primer pockets then neck size. But never heard that about letting spindles free.my rcbs full length dies are tight and those are centered.

Well, you think they're centered. I'll wager they're not, and if spun on a lathe with a dial indicator, you'd see they are not centered. Why not just leave it loose and not have to deal with the issue at all?

This little tip was passed to me at the range years ago by a well known BR competitor. Once I tested the method for myself, ALL my decapping spindles are now left loose 1/4 turn, and my case neck concentricity immediately went from around .002" - .003" to zero.

Your choice.
