Cooper curse

I have finally been bitten by the cooper curse . Last weekend my wife and I made a road trip to Souix Falls,SD so she could meet a friend for an appointment. While in town we visited the local Scheels sports store. While browsing the gun section Cooper Firearms case my eyes wandered to a preowned model 22 varminter .220 swift. I didn't purchase it that night. Coming back to central Minnesota I went to the Scheels in town to see if they would transfer it back here.
After the ball got rolling I am the proud owner of cooper. Now I just need to start saving my pennies again for some scope mounts and glass. Don't worry I will post photos when I get time to snap some.

Now my question if I were to email Cooper and give them the serial # would they be able to get me a copy of the factory 3 shot group?

I would just set me up a target at around 47 yards, believe that is what Cooper does, and fire my own target/group. Although it would not be a official Cooper target, I suppose Bill K

Hey, now you'll have to change your screen name to "Cooperboy"! Talk about a giant step up! Congrats on the new rifle, I hope it lives up to your expectations. But be aware that they DO seem to breed in the safe when left alone.

Doubtful that Cooper actually copies their factory targets, but it never hurts to ask. You will also be able to get your rifles birthday if you ask.

Be sure to post a pic of your new weapon when it arrives. I'm under the impression that Santa is bringing me a new Cooper too, so they'll be some fresh Cooper-porn here soon.

I'm stuck on what scope to save my pennies for. My choices are both Leupold VX-3s. My first choice is a 4.5-14x40 with the VH reticle, second choice is a 6.5-20x40 with the VH reticle. Thoughts?

As for a scope, it probably depends on more what you plan to use the rifle for as for which model, both of which I have on 204's myself. Here's what a VX3 6.5-20X 40mm M1 LR would look like on that rifle in Leupold Low rings:



I've got the 4.5-14X LR M1 on my Kimber 84M in 204 that I use for a walkabout/calling rifle. My Coopers are all used as rat rifles, hence the added magnification requirement. All of them have the excellent VH reticle.

Good choices both....just depends on how you'll use it in the field.

I should have mentioned my purpose with the rifle sorry . It will see some skippy action but mostly paper and coyote hunting. I also have a remington 700 chambered in 220 swift. My goal is to teach skippy to fly this upcoming season. Last season I didn't have the chance as I was too busy assisting in planning a wedding! Now that I tied the knot in October I can finally get out and hunt again.

When it gets out to play though, it really is very playful! Even with me behind it, it does shoot "little biddy groups"

Nice looking furniture. They look almost to nice to be taken out but they sure do work we shoot nice.

Cooper can tell you all about your rifle; birth date, barrel twist, and the load (case, primer, bullet, powder and charge). Depending on when it was made they may be able to tell you the barrel manufacturer but in recent years it has been Wilson barrels but in the early days they used Shilen, Lilja, Kreiger, Bartlein, Wilson; basically any premium barrel they could get.

Lets know how she shoots.

Congrat's on the Cooper Swift. Been eyeballing one just like it with a fluted barrel at a LGS; thinking about selling a couple "off brand" rifles to finance it, as it's zero-sum outlay on gun purchases for this new retiree. Other than swapping repeaters for mostly single-shots, going to all Coopers by selling off more Rem/Savs would likely be "addition by subtraction". For example: after spending 2 days to find an acceptable group for a .204 Remington, on a whim I dug out some old factory ammo to try in my .204 Cooper before cleaning for winter storage; none of the three of various bullet weights - 32, 39, 40 gr. - went over .650" @ 100 yds. (3+shot groups).
As for the magnification level of that Leupold LR VX3 to go with, in my experience those models' stated f.o.v. actually runs on the small side; looking through my 6-20 power ones makes me wish their 8-25X version was offered with a 42 or 44 mm objective lens.

Well Bob, the 'secret' is that when we first got together, I sat her down, told her "I'm a rifle loony and there's no cure", told her there would always be guns coming and going, I'll be out in the outback alot and I spend 'man-time' in the garage and gun room. I think as long as you're up front with them from the get-go, and they still want you around after they know what you're about, well then it's a win-win situation. So far, it's worked for 32 years. Failure to follow the procedure usually results in hearing the dreaded "why do you need another gun?" sentence. Then you must adhere to the ten ways to sneak guns into the house covertly. (But that's another story altogether! )

Also, the other half of the truth is considering where she works, being surrounded by total and complete rifle and hunting maniacs that really live the dream, it's no wonder she's completely conditioned to our "Dark Side" and understands my meager gunny-ways. Compared to those guys, I'm a lightweight rifle nut.

RIO- I'm still saving my pennies for that scope . I think I'm gonna go with the 4.5-14 vx-3 though. I'm still on the naughty list with wifey for buying the rifle so I won't push a scope too far yet lol.

I've tried explaining the rifle nut part without success but she may come around....hopefully. We been together for 7 years but only married since October of 14'.
