.17HMR
What type of .17hmr is everyone running? Figured I would start a new thread an get some photos going on.
Mine is a Savage 9317 BRJ with a Leupold VX-1 4x12x40mm scope(picture is my old Nikon) and a cheapo bi-pod. The lil girl loves the hornady 17 gr v-max

Re: .17HMR
Okay, I'll play too......I'm shooting a Ruger switch-barrel rig: 22WMR/17HMR. Started out as a Ruger 77/22 Mag, now also has a Lilja SS 17HMR barrel to choose from. Scoped with a Lupy VX2 4-12X and wears a Moyer 1 lb. trigger, action glass bedded, barrel floated w/chamber support.
A pile of brass from an especially lively squirrel shoot when the rats were running about everywhere. THAT my friends, was a very good day:
And a partial view of the carnage after things settled down a bit. There were also beau coup squirrels out in the alfalfa that can't be seen (the eagles and hawks had a grand time):
Neat lil caliber, also have a CZ 452 in 17HMR, but in all honesty, I'd rather shoot my 17 Ackley Hornet.....cheaper to shoot, more accurate, good for 400 yards, and best of all.....fully reloadable!

Hey, Rick. You mentioned "chamber support". Is that "pillars", or something else? And I am with you on the CF thing!

Re: .17HMR
Jon, by 'chamber support', I refer to the area immediately forward of the action where the juntion of receiver/barrel join. I pour a nice support pad for the chamber area of the barrel to properly support it about 1.5" - 2" long. If not done, the torque of the free-floated barrel hanging off the action actually has an effect of accuracy by stressing the action.RAMOS wrote:Hey, Rick. You mentioned "chamber support". Just imagine a six pound barrel hanging off a bedded action. The downward stress is multiplyed substantially by this weight, causing unwanted torque on the action, and doing nothing good in the accuracy department. Accraglas Gel and some modeling clay to shape the pad and create the dam are all that's needed (once the stock material has been removed that is).
I do this to every rifle I own, and from experience, it's worth the effort.

Re: .17HMR
Jon, me too. It's interesting to me also as to all the misunderstandings as how to properly bed the recoil lug. And oh boy, if done incorrectly, you'll chase your tail for quite a spell. About every used rifle I've ever brought home that had been bedded by a previous owner had bogus bedding principals applied, and I usually end up doing it over. It's not hard to do, ya just gotta do it right.RAMOS wrote:Rick, thanks. Always just took that to be part of the bedding job. Apologies for the hi-jack!
Hi-jack....just as guilty here...... Now about those HMR's......

Re: .17HMR
Recent addition to my rimfire battery. How many 17HMR's is "enough"?
Anschutz 1517HB 17HMR with Leupold VX2 4-12X AO with LR reticle in Calhoon Hunker ring sets:
The little rifle seems to prefer Hornady 17gr Varmint Express.....just like my other HMR's. What a surprise.
Now we just need to get past winter and get after Skippy and his pals in spring!
