Nice job I am sure you will be pleased. Shilen barrels shoot extreamly well. I am currently machining a shilen 1-8 twist barrel blank for one on my 700 actions. Your hooked now, I know i am i was out loking at mills today! I might have found the right one?

Valar I can see how you could get hooked doing this. I'm already thinking about the next one, a 6.5 caliber maybe a 260 Remington. My stock came today, a Bell & Calrson Light Tactical. It fit perfectly and the barrel channel matched the contour of the Shilen barrel exactly. It free floats all the way to the action. Here's a couple of pics of my completed project. Hopefully my son and I can get out to the range this weekend and see how it shoots.

What kind of Lathe do you have, and was it a short chambered barrel or did you cut the threads and chamber it?

No lathe, the barrel was threaded and short chambered. It just required finish reaming by hand.

I got out to the range this morning to see how the new barrel would shoot and I'm very encouraged by the results. Once I get the loads dialed in I think she will shoot very well. I don't know what happened with that flier but the other four grouped well.

Thanks Bow. Hopefully our friends in East Rochester will get some more 10X in one of these days and I can see if I can shrink the groups a touch more. I'll check this Friday or Saturday and IM you if they got restocked.

Is that the same Shilen barrel that Midway sells? I've been looking at those to put on at least one of my three stainless action Remingtons (.204, .221, .22-250), just haven't decided which one to do first. Looks like it will be the SPSS '250 as the heavy barrel will touch the B&C A2 stock if you support it as far out as the swivel studs; the smaller-dia. Shilen should also eliminate the need to hog out the barrel channel any more.
As most of the gunsmiths in my area seem to be "work ethically"-challenged, thanks to your tips here I'm sure I can make the swap myself.

Rowdy, I got the barrel from Brownell's. I don't know if the profile would be the same as what Midway sells but other than that they should be the same. I hear you about local gunsmiths - "I can have it for you in 4 months, if I don't get busy." Go for it and do it yourself. You will have to invest in some equipment but if you have 3 guns to do it will more than pay off. It's fun and easy to do, all you need is patience. You get the satisfaction of doing it your self and you will know it was done right. Have fun man.
