700 Rem. barrel threads

Post by stein »

Hey guys, I feel some what foolish asking but I really do not know the answer here. Will a barrel that came out of a 700 Rem. receiver thread into say a model 70 Win., M77 ruger? I have a hart barrel in 30-06 AI that I need to build into a precision rifle but cannot find a decent Rem. 700 to start from. Any insight would really help. Thanks

In a word: "No". Both use 16 TPI, but the shank dia. is different, as is the shank length. With complete re-machining, you could make it work, but it's not a straight R&R. Much more hassle than it's worth, when you consider you can just buy a replacement barrel that will screw right on.

No way, without some gun smithing... Better to buy a drop in/fit barrel from a shop or check out the prefit ones from Bagara barrels. Bill K

Ok. Well the barrel that I already have came out of a 700 and I have to get it cut rechambered and threaded but if I can get a 700 then I can just have him true the action to the barrel. I was just thinking maybe I could just buy one of the thousand ruger around my area.

Stein. I am not sure what you are saying, sort of confused. But it can be done, but will take a lot of fitting and work. I think you would be money ahead to go to Pac-nor or other gunsmith and have them fit a barrel to your action. Check some out on the web. Bill K :)

I finally found a Rem. 700 in a 30-06. Built in Aug. of '75 paid 315.00 out the door. About 85% contact on the bolt lugs so I "think" we are just about ready to finish trueing every thing up and away we go!
