WS2 Question

What, if anything do you do with your WS2 or moly barrels after cleaning.....before heading out to the range or hunting? Dry patch? Light oil? Nothing? Thanks.

In the one rifle I still use WS2 coated bullets for, I used to run a loose fitting patch with some Lock-Ease on it through my cleaned barrel and then let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to let the carrier dry. Then I would run two loose fitting very thin synthetic patches through to get out any excess material.

Since I started using colloidal graphite in two of my new barrels, I clean them and then use the Graphoil to treat them and one loose patch to get out the excess. That's just the way I do it, and your mileage and methods may vary considerably.

I use hBN on the bullets I shoot in most of my rifles now and use the Graphoil product to treat the barrels after they are cleaned. I have been toying with the idea of using a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and hBN for the barrel treatment, but the Graphoil is working so good I haven't been to anxious to switch methods.

First off............SF mentioned combining alcohol and HBN...............

As a LONG-TIME user of Lock-Ease (read long before it became a popular and trendy topic on the internet), I'm not sure what diluting it in alcohol would do for you....?

It already contains a fairly rapid drying agent as well as an anti-corrosive agent. I could see possibly swabbing a barrel dry with isoprorpyl and letting it evaporate, so in some minds the barrel is "squeeky clean", and then applying Lock-Ease. But combining the two just dilutes the Lock-Ease and its anti-corrosive element and offers no additional benefits.

I have been using Lock-Ease since the early 1980's, and because of its anti-corrosive nature, I have never found a need to oil a chrome moly barrel after applying L-E. And I live along the very humid Texas Gulf Coast.

I've never been a user or a believer in bullet coatings, so I have no comment on the effects of alcohol and HBN combined. Quien sabe.....?

The mix of hBN and alcohol as a carrier has been done commercially by someone, but I don't recall who.
