Berger bullets for 6mmAI

Post by Sidewinderwa »

I built a 6mmAI and am working on getting some loads for it. I have a 1:12 twist in my barrel as it is a dedicated coyote rifle. What Berger bullets have worked for your 6mmAI / 243? I am not concerned about pelts, just want a quick kill. I was thinking the 69 grain match varmint Berger bullet might be a good bullet for it but open for what works best. I also have some 75 grain VMax bullets loaded up, waiting for my chronograph to arrive. This will be a long range rifle, tired of the yotes sitting out there at 600 yards howling and laughing at me. If you have some good loads for the 6mmAI, I would appreciate that as well. I am trying some Ramshot Hunter powder since I have good luck with other Ramshot powder. I have not shot any Berger bullets yet and thought that it is time to give them a try.

I'm shooting .243 win. and have great luck with 75 grain Vmax. I like the BC of this bullet and it's got great long range capability. Puts the yotes down and out! I havent tried the bergers but compare bergers bc to the vmax if you want those long shots. Check out this site http://www.6mmbr.com/gunweek042.html
I've been using 46.2 gr of H414 in one gun and 46.4 in another. The 6mm is my favorite caliber. (I even like it better than my 204) The 6mm AI probably a Cooper will be my next gun. I'd like to hear your final results as im always looking at possibilities for this caliber.
It's hard to detect good luck, It looks so much like something you've worked hard for and earned.

Don't over look the 87 VMAX, it too has good ballistics as long as the 12 twist will shoot them (I shoot a 6mm Remington). For the 75 VMAX I've had decent luck with RE-15, 42.6 grains, 3400 fps, .5 x .5" groups @ 200 yds pretty consistently.

I think I have the Hornady bullets covered; 58, 75 & 87 grain VMax and 70 SP bullets. I looked at the 6mmBR article before I built my 6mmAI, it is very good. I want to try a non-polymer tipped bullet for good penetration for this rifle and thought the Berger would be a good one to try for this caliber.

I've found a very good accuracy load using the 88 gr bergers with 42.8 gr of H-414 and an OAL of 2.83 in my T3 lite.
Most shots at dogs have been around 250 yds. Very rarely get an exit.

Thanks Gube. They must expand pretty quickly for no exit hole.

Shooting a 243AI 1:9 twist and having excellent results with Sie70 and 95gr Match King bullets. Both are HPBT.Got into the 0s (barely),yesterday with the 95 and H4831sc seated 2.780.Don't know how they will perform on varmits yet.I did develop it for long range PDs.
Also got excelent results with Speer 70gr TNT FBHP,and WW760 or H414.

Joe, let me know how they do on the long range prairie dogs. I was thinking of taking my 6mmAI for that very reason as well. The wind can be strong in Montana at times.

Generally the 80gn Berger is about as long as you can go in a 12 twist 6mm.

That is why I was going between the 69 and 80 grain Bergers. I know people have been shooting the 87 grain VMax bullets with the 12 twist barrel with good luck. I will be giving them a try. It is my day off tomorrow and wanted to do some shooting and we are having over 50 mile an hour wind as I type!!!!

Wind is the reason for the 243AI w/95gr MKs.Not looking for terminal performance at long distance, other than accurate wind bucking ability and, PDs, DRT/
