Rem 40X for PD shooting? Any opinions on the 40X??

Have an opportunity at an older 40X Custom Shop rifle(223) single shot. Anyone have experience shooting these and have any advice... do it, don't, buy a Cooper...Would be added to the herd to be a prairie dog shooter, quite a little nicer that the rest of my line-up, closest thing I have to it would be an older Sako 223 varmint Vixen, I think. Is there much of a market for these older Remingtons? Nice shape, all original, do I need to be worried about a 223 being "shot-out"?? Any opinions here??

40X's are generally thought of, as what rifles should be judged by.

Have seen excellent examples with very fine craftsmanship (metal/mechanical work by a competent gunsmith).

Have seen a few that have been built, rebuilt, and/or not worked on by competent gunsmiths...so.....look at it very hard. Is it worn out or not?

Well, I pulled the trigger on the deal. Taking a 40XBR to a prairie dog town might be like taking a sports car to the grocery store, not the best choice but it will difinitely get you there!! Should be here next week. Can't wait to see what it will do.

remy: I disagree with your analogy, as on various PD and squirrel shoots through the years, I've run into plenty of 40X's in one configuration or another, Coopers, Dakotas, and so many full custom and even water-cooled rigs, that nothing surprises me any more. I see many more very cool rifles at these shoots like your new 40X than I had ever imagined previously. Guys that will take the time, effort involved, and money to pursue PD shooting, will likely have trick rifles to do it with.

Take it, shoot it, and you'll likely be in very good company out there on the prairie. Congrats on the new rifle. I think you'll enjoy the accuracy level it will provide when fed properly. The dogs will hate it, I promise.

I put over 20,000 rounds through a 40X .223, sold it to a friend and he still shoots it. Regular cleaning and don't overheat it, you can get amazing accuracy for a long time.

I just picked it up last night from my FFL dealer. I'm struggling getting pics off my cameras right now, not sure what the issue is. I'll post some pics once I get that issue resolved.
