My buddy decided he wanted to start loading his 270 so he went and bought some 140 accubonds and H4831SC to play with. His rifle did not like the accubonds but loved the 130 Sierra Gamekings I had laying around. The first load shot with 59.5gr of H4831SC produced 3050FPS average with a spread of 15 into a ragged hole....we were both impressed. What loads have you 270 aficionados used? Any experience with the 130gr Gamekings. I have always shot the 30-06 and don't have a lot of info to share with him. After seeing the results at the range today I am interested

The formula I've used since being a teenager reading Jack O'Connor, is with 60.0grs of H4831 with a Sierra 130gr BT in WW cases and a standard primer, usually a CCI 200. This gives 3,160 fps from my old pre-'64 Model 70's 24'' barrel, and has accounted for more deer than I'll ever admit to on the internet. Accuracy is right around .75 MOA, usually a bit better.

(When I worked up in BC logging camps back in the 70's, we could shoot TEN deer a year if that sez anything......)

I hunted with a 270 from the mid 60's until I quit hunting in '87. I bought one of the first Ruger 77's and it was a struggle getting it to shoot under 1.5".

I finally settled on a 140 gr. Hornady with H4350 and it shot well. Also got excellent results with 130 Sierra bullets with H 4831, although I did not like the results when shot on deer. Thus the reason for shooting the 140 gr. bullet. Just a lot of trial and error before finding what shot well.

Thanks for the info, it seems he is on the right track. I think he will be trying some 130gr Partitions, accubonds and innerbonds as he is looking for a little tougher bullet than the gamekings. He really does not have any experience with gamekings but has been INTERNET brain washed that the gamekings will some how self destruct on the armor plated game found today. I told him to just shoot them first, but that did not take.

Happy New year to all and may the new year be a healthy one for all. I bought a uses 270 win on blegan mauser action and it liked Vita Vori powder N-160 55.0 grn with either a Sierra 130 gameking or a 135 matchking would give me 1/2 to 5/8 3 shot group at 200 yards. I liked how it shot and didn't test any further.

When I first started getting serious about hunting and reloading, I knew I lot of very dedicated hunters of both deer and elk.

They all told the same story, that the Sierra bullets just opened too quick. To the man, they said they would never again hunt with those bullets. Being young, it made an impression and formed a bias. In all my hunting/shooting, I only bought one box of sierra bullets. I am sure Sierra heard those comments and made adjustments over the years.

In hindsight, it also makes me question if those fellows were putting the bullets where they were needed for clean 1 shot kills.

By the way, I make a couple trips to your area each spring for rats and chucks.

I have had good luck with them, but I have never pushed them at nose bleed velocities either.

Next time you are in the area let me know, there are a bunch of squirrels that need to be shot.

I've loaded for about eight different 270 rifles over the years. Winchesters (pre and post 64), Remington, Ruger, Kimber and Browning. Every one that I tried it in (all but one) liked the Hornady 130 SP Interlock and 60.0 H-4831. I have also had success with the Hornady 140 BTSP Interlock using RL-22 and IMR-4831; and with 150 bullets (Hornady SP Interlock and Nosler Partition) using H-4831, RL-22, Acurate 3100 and IMR-4831. In October I got a one shot kill at 200 yards on a very nice bull elk using the 150 Partition and 56.0 IMR-4831.
