What zero?

I was just wondering what zero range people are setting their .204's at? I am still waiting for my new rifle to be finished being built and am starting to prepare everything for its arrival!! . I had my old .204 zerord at 200 yds but was thinking of zeroing the new one at about 250 or 275.

what are your farthest shoots going to be. target or fur, let us know what you intend to do with your new toy. what kind of glass and or retical may also change your way of thinking. there is a wealth of info on this site.

Are you dialing up your shots or using hold overs? If dialing up. set it at a 100 yard zero and build your dope chart.

Agree with acloco; zero at 100 yds and dial up from there using a custom come-up chart made for your particular load. If using the Varmint Hunter Reticle in a Leupold or another like reticle, zero at 200 and use the other lower reticle intersections for 300 400,. etc. Of course to use any reticle effectively, you have to actually shoot the rifle and load at various distances, 'cause they won't be exactly 300 yards or 400, but more like 318 or some other goofy uneven yardage, depending on load being used.

If you've got an elevation turret that's finger adjustable, you're set.

I always consider how high the peak will be and can I live with that peak. For instance, if you are zero at 275 the peak might be almost 2 inches high at 150 or 2 1/4 at 175 (I'm just picking examples out of the air). I hate to shoot over everything at close range and it is hard for me to remember to hold low at those distances. If I thought I would never shoot closer than 275 then the peak at 150 would not be a concern.

With my 204, I zero Leupold varmint hunter reticle at 200. The first line below center is 370, the next is 460, and the next is 550. This works on three 204's with 39 gr SBK's.

Hi Adam.
As you know my 204 is a dedicated fox rifle, and used with the lamp a lot of the time.
Due to this fact, it makes it difficult to dial in ranges as a fox will not stay in the same place for long.
Because of this i zero for 235yds with the 39gr sierra`s.
This gives me a point blank range of 285yds on a 3 inch target, and means that i can point and shoot on 99% of the foxes i shoot.

Thanks for the replies . I will be using it for lamping foxes but also long range rabbits and crows. The furthest distance really will be about 500 yds and maybe the odd 600 yd shot but thts rare. I have ordered a nigtforce 5.5-22 x56 with the varmint reticule. And the new gun has a fast twist for shooting bullets 39gr and over.

With 32 V-Max I'm zeroed at 275, and with the 40 V-Max 250.

Good info to know as I'm just getting started with the .204 Ruger. For my 30-06, 6.5x55 and .260 I sight in 1 1/2" high at 100 yds and the .243 is 1.25" high at 100 yds. I suspect the .204 will be used for somewhat longer distances though . . .

Mine's mainly for critter shooting and have it zeroed at 238yards for max point blank.
