carbon ring in the throat

Post by Bitman »

I've been reading some post, both here and on other sites, about carbon ring fouling in the throat.
How long does it take for this to develope?
What is the best way to remove it? Or what do you folks recommend as a cleaning procedure to prevent it from ever developing. The bore of the 204 is so small, you can't really tell whats going on in there. Help please. :?

Bitman,
I think that it would be possible due to the "jump" to the lands that the bullet makes with factory ammo but if you clean after every 20 shots (like I do) then it would never be an issue.

How long it takes to develope depends on your barrel and powder choice.
Just my opinion but 10X will probably be quilty of creating one sooner than most powders. More frequent cleaning is required. A fellow 204 shooter with a borescope backed up my opinion on that when he tried 10X.
He reported lots of stubborn carbon build up in the throat as opposed to the other powders he had tried.
I have no borescope and do not use 10X after my first attempt.

Besides 10X its really a crapshoot. I used quite a bit of Win 748 in the 204. It burns sooty but does not seem to accumulate. Cleans out pretty easy. I've run upwards of 400 rds through a tube and accuracy was still consistent. I've done the same with Benchmark. Your barrel had better be pretty well broke in before this will work.
On new tubes I've seen both BM and H-4895 be quite stubborn to clean out even tho these are fairly clean powders.
