Rust?

Post by Ruger No. 1 »

On my press and a few of my dies I have a little bit of rust on them, is this something to be concerned about?

Being an old car guy, I hate the word rust.
When I lived in more humid parts of the country, I used to have a little sometimes. On the outside of a die it can't really hurt anything untill the threads would be so rusty you couldn't adjust properly. The inside is a major concern. clean them up with the same solvent you clean your rifle barrels with, thenspray with a little WD40 and let air dry. The liquid evaporates and leaves a dry coating to prevent rust.

The press would just be cosmetic unless it was so bad as to hinder moving parts. Treat that the same as your dies and you shouldn't have anymore trouble. I like the WD40 because it doesn't attract dust after it dries. With a little denatured alc it comes right off.

as long as the rust is not pitting the steel, surface rust, it is not really a problem. :) but i would suggest getting rid of it, before it becomes a major problem. try some oil to see if it will rub off the surfaces. my preference would be kroil. if the rust just rubs off, in my opinion, you are good to go. make sure the insides of the dies are good and polished. inspect carefully. if you notice any pitting on the inside of the dies, chances are it is time for a new set of dies! :wall:

if new dies are in order, my personal choice would be Redding dies.

and i agree with hotshots post too, although i am not a real big fan of wd-40.

Birchwood Casey makes a product called Barricade. This is the only product that I have found that will STOP rust in humid or even marine environments. Well, not the only product, but one of the best. Eezox would be the best. Barricade comes in a spray can and that saves me a lot of time and trouble. Try it, it WORKS. Use it on all guns and you will eleminate surface rust.
