Barrel Bedding

Post by cohunter »

I have bedded my barrel on previous rifles but I need to do it again but I dont have the release agent. I was wondering if anyone has used just a normal petrolum based oil to act as the agent say an engine oil or hoppes or something like that. Please let me know what you think or you experiances

thanks

No problem, Pam cooking spray works great, any good car wax works well. When I'm out of release agent, I use paste wax, them coat it with Pam for good measure....I would NOT use any motor oil or anything like that for a release agent.

I use modeling clay for areas that I don't want the bedding compound to seep into, also use it as a dam in the barrel channel to form the pad for the barrel chamber area.

Every rifle I've bedded using the above has come apart very easily....no unintential glue-in's!

Took my cue from a long-time 'smith and use Kiwi clear shoe polish as a release agent and Devcon 10110 steel as a bedding compound. The Devcon isn't cheap, but won't check or powder like some of the 'standards' are known to.
