Re: Bore Guides
from my personal experience, you should be using a bore guide. makes cleaning your rifle a little easier, but most important is the protection it affords your barrel and chamber. i have used the hoppes universal bore guide, and it works ok, but i would recommend a sinclair bore guide with chamber specific chamber end and the o-ring seal keeps the solvents from running back into the trigger.

Re: Bore Guides
A good bore guide will keep you from destroying your bore from rod abrasion. I consider bore guides essential shooting gear. Shooters can wear out a barrel with improper cleaning techniques real quick. Mike Lucas makes the best bore guides I've ever used. They are caliber and cleaning rod diameter specific. You'll need to know the diameter of your rod when you call him. A good Dewey rod matched up with a Lucas bore guide is a hard combination to beat. The cost is a reasonable $35 for top of the line gear. Here's his phone number. (803) 356-0282 (7 days a week, 8am to 8pm EST)
Remember to get a cleaning rod long enough to push a brush out of the muzzle with the bore guide in place. My rod is 37" long. The barrel is 26".

Re: Bore Guides
Be sure you know what rod you are using as Mike will ask you. Also make sure that it has plenty of length as you can see in Skipper's pic.
I have Lucas guides for all of mine also.

Re: Bore Guides
Just tell Mike you're using a 20 caliber Dewey rod and he pretty much knows what diameter to make it. I think he has all the standard rod diameters memorized. Get several rods and you'll spend a lot less time changing between jags and brushes. I would also recommend the little bolt recess swabs. They get those hard to get at areas clean. Dewey makes a "No Harm" 20 caliber brush that also works well. The wire is doubled back on itself at the tip so there are no sharp edges. I buy those by the dozen. It seems a brush looses that snug fit after a very few uses. There's nothing like a nice tight brush to get the bore clean.
