heavier bullets

Post by 1340 »

In the 223 Remington there seems to be a trend towards heavier bullets. Will this happen with
the 204 Ruger?
Thanks.

We are up to 50 grainers. How much heavier you want?

Berger says the 50 needs a 1:9 twist barrel. Anything much heavier will be long enough to require an insane twist rate in a 20 caliber. I don't know how long the 50 Berger is (anyone have one to measure), but a .204 bullet that is 1.2" long would require a 1:7ish twist barrel. A bullet that is .95" long requires a 1:9 twist, that's what Berger recommends for the 50 grain.

I think it's unlikely that heavier bullets will get too prominent in .20. If you want heavier, you can use .224" for a lot less fuss and bother, rather than rebarrel a .20.
The whole thing behind .20s is speed, adding too much weight will cancel the speed it relies on.

I was just wondering if bullets would get heavier, and as was mentioned jumping to .22 cal. would be a better solution.
Thanks.

i measured the 50 @ 0.8205 oal,0.414 from the tip to the ogive,0.099 boatail
this was a random 5 bullet average

on the saubier web site i saw a custom 62 grain with a oal1.035
If not for my forgetful nature remembering things would be no problem at all.
