Holy Doodle Glen!! That's a whopping wasp/hornets nest! Best to make it go away now while it's cold, and they're sleepy. Be careful though.....you could open a real Hornet's Nest!

What will your strategy be for safe removal? (safe for you!)

I'm gonna bag it up in February after a couple below freezing days & keeo it until June when I can spray it with lacquer or something to preserve it for my den/computer room.

iceboxdan-- I'll keep you in mind for the next one. Would spray lacquer be the way to preserve it??

I always use a 12 guage semi with full choke to eradicate those things. Works great. Nothing left to save though.

Bout 12 years ago I was driving with the wife and good friend down a backroad. Huge nest in a tree within easy reach. Wife said she wanted it. I said she's nuts. Friend said no problem, this time of year they're underground. He snapped off the branch and put it in the toolbox of my truck.
Three hours later we got home and my friend opened the tool box to find out he was wrong. Those whitetails were chilled but very very angry.

I got one like that about 10 yrs ago in the winter , never had any hornets come to life and it seems to be holding up pretty good . I just recently read that the nests are abandoned every winter and are not used again , so if its been good and cold for awhile the nasty buggers should be gone !!!!

Take note , I said SHOULD be gone !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hear you WW!! It's back up to the mid 40's here again & on the next cold snap I'm gonna lay it out on the ground overnight & check it the following AM. They should be in the ground tho. I just pulled it down during the next to last cold snap with temps in the teens during the day & colder at night. Thanks for your concern tho. A fella can't be too careful or get enough good advice. I'm hoping they are gone too!!

I'd send my buddy over to check it for you but he's still running. His names Forrest, Forrest Gump.

Actually part of the nest got torn off in the high winds we had. The backside on the top in that picture. It wasn't repaired so I'm hoping for the best.
