I am going, not hunting but going at least not right away. This year is my sons first year elk hunting and he drew a very coveted elk license in a great place. Here in CO we have a program called Ranching for Wildlife where large ranch owners allow a very very small number of public hunters on their property to hunt. The place is huge (55,000 acres plus) and the elk and game animals very abundant. My goal, first and foremost is to get my son on one and then if that all goes well I may buy an over the counter license.

skb, remind your son to watch out for those scopes, they can ding you in the eye  .

No elk or deer tag for me this year. Last year was my best ever, though. Got a javelina, deer, and cow elk and the usual rabbits and squirrels. :D

He currently has a reminder that stares back from the mirror at him everyday. He stills thinks the .300 Win mag is the gun of choice.

I'll get to LOOK at a bunch of elk, they raise elk for restaurants in Northern Missouri, and there are several elk farms right outside town where I deer hunt. I always try to stop by and study on 'em when I'm out there. I have decided I don't want to shoot one, though, it looks like a LOT of work to get one out of the back country, and I'm basically lazy.............
We have the largest elk herd in the East here in Kentucky(6500+), and our tags are only $10, so I might just have to apply one of these years, and see if I'm one of the lucky 300. It's easy enough to get the truck close, here in Kentucky..............

Yep my young son is pretty spoiled when it comes to big game hunting. Up to this point we hunt deer/antelope on the farm and if you shoot one most of the time you can get a vehicle pretty close. Its also flat. With this being his first elk hunt he is in for a whole new world. In my much younger/dumber days we would kill an elk in some rediculous place and spend days getting it out....he's not seen that. Most elk start out large and the farther you have to drag it the larger they get........450 lbs. turns into 1000. Elk math.........
