Re: Frustrated with the 1-12 twist and 40gr bullets
I shoot a factory Savage model 12FV.
I shoot factory ammo:
Hornady 32gr,40gr, and 45gr SP
Winchester 34gr JHP (precision expansion point)
Out of all the weights, the 40gr get me the best accuracy and the best overall performance. I use the 34 grainers for close (100yds or less) shots on stray cats or similar critters. The 32 grainers are used for 200yd or less shots on small targets such as squirrels, rabbits, crows. The 45 grainers are used for close (150yds or less) shots on large targets (coyote or nusiance animals).
The 40gr has, in my opinion, proven to be the go to round for small game close up (except squirrel ) I am 3 shot clover leafing at 100yds when I'm in a hurry to impress someone, or 5 shot knock-out (the edges of all 5 holes touch leaving a large gaping hole in the paper you can stick your finger in ) when I'm serious about selling a 204 (again, 100yds). At 200 yds I'm popping golf balls all day (except the first round from the barrel).
I blame my accuracy on a no caffeen diet and a sweet accutrigger!
I have not reloaded, but I will at some point in time. Thus a reason for viewing this site! (sales plug) I'm not too good with math, but the mod 12 witha 1:12 likes the 40.

I think part of the problem with some rifles shooting the 40's accurately and some not is that the rate of twist is either more than or less than 1/12 in that particular rifle. Sometimes the barrel maker may not get the twist exactly 1/12. That is my guess and I am sticking to it.

Re: Frustrated with the 1-12 twist and 40gr bullets
Sorry to hear about the 40 problem. I have a Howa 1500 in.204 with a 1-12 twist and it likes 32, 39 & 40's. For the 40's I use 26.8 gr. of RL 15. The velocity is "only" 3650, but very accurate.
