H4198
O K, I did something stupid. I found some loads that I wanted to try and bought a pound of H4198. Now I find out that these loads called for IMR 4198. Does anyone have any loads for Hodgdon 4198? I assume there is a difference. Thanks in advance for your help. Chuck

On the burn rate chart they are right next to each other. If you didn't get to close to max you may be ok. Good luck.

luzzi308--Both IMR4198 and H4198 are a bit faster than the most commonly used powders for the .204 Ruger, but I think with the lighter-weight bullets, you should be able to get H4198 to work nicely.
I purchased a pound of H4198 to use in an old Rem 700 in .222 caliber and couldn't get that triple-deuce to shoot no matter what I tried. I cannibalized the action and made a .17 Remington out of it. Anyway, I still had nearly a pound of H4198, so I decided to try it with the 32 gr. Sierras in my Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger. I found several powder charges that gave me pretty decent groups with H4198. Some of the charge weights that worked good in my Savage 12VLP were 22.7 gr., 22.9 gr., and 23.0 gr. I picked 22.9 and loaded up a bunch of these 32 gr. Sierras. I did have many of these 32 gr. Sierras tumble sideways through the target. They didn't seem to like to travel much faster than 3,850 to 3,875 fps. However, my 22.9 gr. load was shooting nice small groups and giving me and average MV of about 3,900 fps but I decided to stay with that load. I was only shooting prairie dogs with them, so I didn't mind watching a bullet hit the ground halfway to the prairie dog once in awhile
