.204 Brass Observations Range Update

As promised in my previous post, I have some range data to report. I made it to the range today and managed to shoot 50 rounds of a known good load using Nosler brass. I did not get a chance to shoot the loads in the Remington brass as the wind came up and it started to snow. Had to hurry and pick up the chronograph, etc. Aaaahhhh, spring time in Central Oregon

All were 5 shot groups, 100 yds, velocity measured with Oehler 35p at 12' to first screen. Velocity reported below is avg for each 5 shot string. Temperature at time of shooting was 38 deg with a swirling breeze which I estimated was around 2 -5 mph.

Load: Nosler brass (new), Rem 7 1/2, AA-2015, Sierra 39 BK, cartridge OAL, 2.290".

2. 25.0 grs.   3486 fps   ES 18   group size: 0.507"
3. 25.2 grs.   3523 fps   ES 18   group size: 0.267"
4. 25.4 grs.   3563 fps   ES 23   group size: 0.524"
5. 25.6 grs.   3582 fps   ES 25   group size: 0.511"

Load: Nosler brass (new), Rem 7 1/2, AA-2015, Nosler 34 FBHP, cartridge OAL, 2.243".

2. 25.6 grs.   3659 fps   ES 33   group size: 0.412"
3. 25.8 grs.   3687 fps   ES 16   group size: 0.340"

5. 26.2 grs.   3747 fps   ES 16   group size: 0.811"

You can draw you own conclusions from the data, but the results are some of the best I have ever achieved with the Rem 700 VLS. I'm sure a lot of the consistency was due, in part, to the quality of the Nosler brass.

Whatever you're doing, you're doing it right. Those ES figures are pretty good.

I wished I could duplicate those. It would be nice if the velocities were a little higher, though. You ought to try some RE-10X or H4895 if you haven't already. I'm also considering some BLC-2 after all the good reports I keep reading.

I have shot H4895 with the 39 SBK with very good results. However, for this test, I wanted to try a new jug of AA-2015 since I had such great results a month ago with a 15 year old jug of 2015.
Funny thing, for both the old and new AA-2015, 25.2 grains shot by far the best. However, for the old 2015 the 5 shot velocity/ES was 3803 fps with an ES of 95; group size 0.126". For the new, as you can see from above, 3523 fps/ES 18 and group size 0.267". Huh??

I rationalized it as the old powder was most likely mil surplus and is getting hotter. But, just a guess on my part. I did expect the velocities to be faster than they were. Oh well, we may never figure that one out.

Don't forget the Benchmark. 26.3gns is published max for 35 Bergers. The trick is to Silverfox it a little. Then it really starts to shine.

Gerry-- Excellent post,but as Skipper said you ought to try some RE-10x my velocity with the 39 BK and 25.5gns was 3803 5 shot average and ES 13 and it shot .350 groups, give it a try

I haven't forgotten your advice. You can bet I will try it. I haven't been to the range recently. We have been building a house since last June. We will close in the morning and I have been busy going over last minute details with the builder for about two weeks now. They will disconnect my high speed internet Friday and we should be in the new house by Sunday night. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days I'm just moving. I'll be back on line as soon as possible.

I'm getting my own garage in the new house. The wife will have her own separate two car garage so my garage will be off limits. I am looking forward to setting up my work/reloading bench. I'm going to seal the garage floor in a checkerboard pattern for the Vette. This is going to be Man Central. I can hardly wait.

Skipper , don't forget the Tim Allen grunts on the man room !!!!!

I just recently moved my loading room up to the first floor from the basement , and man do I love it , I have windows on two sides and can see the turkeys and deer and woodchucks while loading , heck I can test loads just about without leaving my chair !! I never new what I was missing before and find myself really enjoying alot more time behind the bench , I got alot of calibers loaded up and even taught myself how to do a little fishing rod wrapping and laying on the epoxy for the hook keepers . It sure is nice to have all your stuff in one place so you can enjoy it , good luck setting up your new loading room.

Hey Skipper, What year is your Vette? Do you ever check in with the Corvette Forum? I have a MY 01 Vette. I was wondering if any Vette owners were also varmint hunters and now I know.
