22 Long Rifle - 200 yards?

There is a local shoot using only 22 LR rimfire rifle or pistol and the distance to target is 200 yards.

I have a 10" bull barrel Ruger Mark II and two 10/22's. Both 10/22's have aftermarket barrel - one is a Shilen and the other is a Volquartzen.

Can honestly say, I have no clue if any of the 3 will even put a group together at 200 yards.

Anybody have suggestions on ammo? (Like I am going to be able to go to downtown and buy any)

ELEY TENEX, Red Box. It's spendy but its good, about the same price as 17 HMR. WOLF works pretty good too but I've never tried it @ 200 yards.

any target stuff would be a good place to start grab some different brands and see what shoots the tightest group ,thats a long way for the 22 lr best of luck bazz

The only way I shoot good groups at 200 yards is with a proven round tested at 100 yards. I prefer HV but many rounds will shoot well at 50 yards or even at 75 yards but then scatter once the the bullet drops thru the sound barrier. You'd be surprised what a 22 will do at that distance. When conditions are excellent, I can average about 1.25" and have had 4 shot groups as small as 3/4"
...and btw when you first shoot that distance a normally sighted in 22 will drop about 30-35"

Tom - Can't say much about group size at that range, but using holdover reticles, kentucky elevation, artillery principals and much luck, we've made hits on squirrels over 200 yards many times.

Using WW Power Point 40gr HP's in our custom 10-22's, it really thumps the rats way out there, and kicks up enough dirt to be easily seen through the scope when we miss, so correction is easy to walk 'em in there. Here's Rat Force One (Dan) from our crew with a moribund rat slayn at exactly 255 yards from the H-bar gate seen just over his shoulder in the background with his custom 10-22 last year:

Sounds like an interesting match......be sure to let us know how it all shakes out.......22LR's at 200 yards.....now that's interesting!

Take whichever ammo you've found to group best in your guns (the Eley recommendation is a great one...), use a ballistics calculator, and figure out how much you dial down your scope for that range. Then go, verify your zero, and shoot your best. :-)

Could not attend because of a work conflict. Did not hear any details either. Sorry...no follow up report.

What scope and reticle is that Don? Looks pretty nice.

I put one of the 4-12 Redfields with Accurange on a 10-22 with a Tacticool stock, Kidd 20" target bbl and Kidd 1.5# trigger, on paper it looks like it might be good for me to 150-ish, but I need to verify it with some of those special 40 grain hollowpoints. Glad I bought 2 bricks about a year ago.

Allen, it's a Pride-Fowler. I think they have since upgraded to higher magnification models. Mines a 3-9

For those in the So. Cal. area, we hold a long range .22 silhouette match every 5th Sunday at the Pala range (ncsapala.com). All rifles are welcome and must be chambered in 22 long rifle.

Chickens (size of half dollars) are shot offhand at 50 yards, Pigs (size of 3x5 card) are at 100 yards and shot prone off a rest. Turkeys (size of a 4x6 card vertical) are at 175 yards and Rams (size of 4x6 card horizontal) are at 200 yards. Targets must be knocked over to count. The delay from shot to a ram falling over is impressive...

When I started I used my scoped 10/22 - and it worked well, but then bought a Crossno liner for my 45-70 sharps and I've been using it since I like the offhand practice for the BPCR matches. Others in the group use various single shots, one guy has a nice scoped Anshutz and theres one guy who shoots it all offhand with his 39a levergun and does pretty good. I've found for my rifle the Federal Champion bulk shoots really well, and I've won the match several times using it.

Thanks for the info.

I do have a small stash of Winchester Power Points and some bulk Federal. Need to get out and shoot a little to wring this out.

Will advise on what works in my rifles and one 10" bull barrel Ruger MII pistol.
