barrel for my 10/22
Hey guys!
I know this has been addressed before, but I've seen to many variances in responses for my liking. I've looked on other forums as well. A lot of people like the Adams & Bennet/Green Mountain (GM) barrels but I was thinking of going with a Lilja or Shilen. However the Lilja is a great deal more expensive than the Shilen or Adams & Bennett/(GM). I have always been a believer in that you get what you pay for. And it seems as though the AB barrels are almost mass produced to the degree that quality and consistency may be compromised. I'm not trying to spend a fortune but I am trying to make this a nice shooter. What have you noticed to give the best "bang for the buck"? Also looking for a nice stock with the .920 barrel groove. Thanks in advance!
I found a barrel from GM that is a 20" futed stainless for 170. The price is just so hard to beat. And I also have been looking at the Hawktech Raptor stock in Midnight coloring for 170. Any feedback/suggestions?
Jeff

Re: barrel for my 10/22
Jeff...............I would say you can't wrong with a Green Mtn barrel. I got a match pair in 22 mag/ 17HMR for my 77/22 and a sister in 22LR for my other 77/22. All are s/s fluted .920 by 20"
They all shoot ragged holes. The 22LR barrel prefered standard velocity or target 22 over the hi-velocity ones
Hope this helps a little. I choose GM for the same reason you might, is the price.

I built my 10/22 with a Volquartsen snake fluted barrel and a Richard's Mircrofit thumbhole stock.

Re: barrel for my 10/22
I decided on the Green Mountain 18" SS Fluted Bull Barrel. I haven't odered it yet because I'm still trying to find the best price. So far Gunkings has it (in stock) with free shipping at $131.
I'm still undecided on the stock though. I was considering the Hogue Overmolded .920" black stock but I read some reviews that say it's not "sturdy" enough at the fore end to support the .920" barrel. My uderstanding was the barrel and stock shouldn't touch in the first place...??? They also said it felt "tacky".
The other stock I'm interested in is the Bell and Carlson Heritage Sporter Black with Grey web. I haven't heard a whole lot about the stock but I know B&C makes great products and I love the coloring. Does anyone have anymore info about this? (or know where this is in stock other than stocky's stocks)

Re: barrel for my 10/22
Jeff,
I have a 10/22 with GM barrel. Tried quite a few cartridges getting it to group. Regular CCI Mini-Mag ended up feeding and shooting the best for me. I have the Hogue stock. The tackiness some object to is a plus in my book. It does have a little bit of flex in the forearm but, I have never seen it come into contact with the barrel. I went the route I did because I did not want to invest "centerfire" money in a .22 and I have been happy with the results. Accuracy at 70 yds. is easily under .75 with the right ammo. Have fun with your build!

Re: barrel for my 10/22
Well, change of plans! I ordered the Green Mountain 20" SS Fluted Target Barrel and I went with the Bell and Carlson Anschultz Thumbhole Black with Grey webbing. I will put pics up as soon as I get it all slapped together. I was going to put a new hammer on as well but the funds are gettin a little short between this project and my upcoming PD trip! (Maybe in a few months!)
Thanks for the input guys!

Re: barrel for my 10/22
I finished the 10/22 build (except for a scope). It includes a Green Mountain 20" SS Fluted Bull Barrel, Bell & Carlson Anschutz Thumbhole stock with grey webbing, Volquartsen target hammer and spring, KID scalloped bolt with KID firing pin and extractor, KID bolt buffer, and KID charging handle with spring and guide rod. Haven't put a round through it yet though!!

Looks "GREEEAT" Sure hope she shoots a bug hole for you.
Don't know what ammo your going to try............but my GM ss 20" like standard velocity. By the way how tight was the barrel to action fit?
Thanks for sharing and we love pics! Some target next when you get the scope mounted.
You probibly found my pic posted of my 77/22. I don't have any 10/22's

Well, I have some bulk Federals, CCI Mini Mag's, Eley's, and Wolf Match Extra. So I have somewhat of a variety to try from. The barrel wasn't as tight as I had expected. Don't get me wrong, it didn't just "slide" right in. But I put the receiver in a padded vice and applied some pressure with a bit of a twisting motion. And then to make sure everything was seated I put some pads on the top of the barrel and gave a few taps with a rubber mallet. I may have to float the barrel yet though. The B&C stock has barrel supports in 2 places and it does make contact. I will see how it shoots and then decide if I need to sand it down. Some have told me that the Ruger receivers aren't sturdy enough to support a bull barrel withough some "help" from the stock. Time will tell because once it's sanded down... it's gone haha

Re: barrel for my 10/22
jdefranc938...........Thanks.......Mine were fairly snug to. I put a little gun oil on the barrel tennion and with some twisting action they went right in. The two stocks I used were volquartsen stocks. They have a pressure pad at at the front of end of the stock at 6 o'clock on the barrel I left it there and both rifles shoot fine. I have a switch barrel 17 HMR/ 22mag in GM and my 22LR all are .920/20" /ss.
Again good luck and thanks for sharing.
