Springfield Armory XD

I'm in the mood to buy a handgun for in the house. I've looked for a long time & have decided I like the SA XD in 9mm. I know 9mm is not the ideal round for self defense but this handgun has to be shootable/controllable for Diane. I don't want her to have something here when I'm not home that she can't control. The 16rd clip should suffice. I'm going to chack out the Rugers again as well. I'm just wondering how well the safety in the handgrip works for people with smaller hands like Diane. That's another reason for a 9mm. The ones I've looked at have a smaller grip for her.

Glen: First off, I have no personal experience with the XD, however from reading industry trade magazines, I can tell you it's the strongest selling handgun in the entire U.S. at this point in time if that tells you anything. It it fits the Misses, it should be a very good choice.

Well I got rid of the wife's LC-9 Ruger, it just didn't feel good in her hands, in spite of it be able to be concealed more easily. They had a recall on hers back then, I hope that issue has been addressed with satisfaction. My wife has had 7 different pistols in 2 years time but she now likes her Sig Sauer model the most in .40 cal, next is her Glock mode 29 sub-compact in .40 S&W. I stayed with my Glocks in 10mm caliber! This are very hard to beat for firepower and penetration.

I have shot several Springfield XD pistols in various calibers and I can say they are an excellent pistol for CCW or just shooting purposes. I was able to shoot a friends .45 caliber right from the box new using factory Blazer ammo and at 50 feet, made head shots on target that would cover with the palm of your hand while firing quickly, around 4 inches. The pistol felt very good in my hands!

I have Glocks in 9mm & 40 S&W. They just function flawlessly and keep on going. Ugly, yep but man do they work...flawlessly.

Jim: Yep, Glock: ugly as sin, but they do go "BANG" every time. My son is the LE rep for Glock, and even he doesn't try to convince me to carry one, as he knows how I feel about them. When shooting one (I HATE the trigger), it's like looking down the wide side of a 2x4 to me. I'll be the first to admit they're reliable and rugged, but dang!....with the poly frame and lumps they're just too gross for me (traditionalist/dinosaur) when compared to a sweet 1911. Old habits are hard to kill.

Glen: I hope the little pistol does well for you. Always nice to bring home a new one. :D

Rick...I'm not against a good 1911 either. But I would take a Glock over a lot of things if for no othe reason...fewer moving parts. Several years back my brother drug me down to Pahrump NV to the "Front Sight Firearms Institute". We took the 4-day course and between us we fired 1800-1900 rounds with nothing more than a bore snake and few drops of oil. Thats when I became impressed with them. Everyone who had one never had a issue. Some of the others at the time had the occasional FTF or FTE.

I'd love to take my 1911 to but it shoots so darn good thus needing oil, IMO. Finding some one to refit a barrel isn't easy around here so I'll keep it for recreational and carry purposes. For the Front Sight Trips, I'll use the Glock(s). Besides, they don't let us pick up the brass anyway so we use aluminum cases.

Have a Happy New Year.

Jim

So far so good. Diane has a few boxes thru her of FMJ & we keep it loaded with Hornady Critical Defense the rest of the time. It's not failed in any manner yet. Diane wants to get back out & shoot a little more this winter so I think we'll find out what it likes to do in the cold.
