Looking to buy my first 1911 in 45acp. But which one? There are so many
choices. Looking to spend about $750-$1000. Anybody have any suggestions?

I'd just have to ask first.....what will you use it for? Carry, target, home defense, three-gun, car/truck gun, casual shooting? A lot depends on your intended purpose.

Give us a bit more to go on.......

What kind of target shooting; there are many disciplines out there and the equipment varies from each one.

IMO, target guns and home defense guns DO-NOT go hand-in-hand mainly because target guns have lighter triggers (not a good idea in high stress situations) and because to really make one accurate, they have to be tighten up, if you will. The problem(s) with that is many, including the type of ammunition that will feed reliably through it. For home defense you want the thing to function; each-time...every time". No exceptions.

I have four 1911 target guns [two wadd-cutters and two hardballs] and everyone of them will shoot consistent 0.5" groups at 50 yards all day long. Lets be clear; "that doesn't mean "I" can do that every shot [or every other shot for that matter...and so on]". Unless I was desperate; they would not be the first pieces I'd reach for.

HTH,

For what you want then, I'd suggest a full size 1911, meaning a 5" barrel and a steel frame. If you live near the ocean, you'll want a stainless gun compared to a blue/carbon steel offering.

A few to look at would be the Ruger SR1911, the Springfield Armory Range Officer, the Kimber Custom Classic and the Remington R1 1911. All those guns meet your price point, and all would serve you well for your intended purpose.

I'd stay away from alloy-framed guns, as being lighter and intended for concealed carry, they all recoil more than their steel-framed cousins. A full size all steel gun will somewhat tame .45 recoil and make it easier to shoot well. The longer sight radius of the 5" gun (compared to 4" barrel "carry" guns) will also aid in better, more accurate shooting.

Okay chuckhunter, if no pic, then it didn't happen. ;)

Failure to post the pic of your new weapon has garnered you the dubious privilege of receiving this:

Don't take it personally, everyone who fails to post their pic gets the same treatment here. If the gun is real, then we need to see it!

Kimber Custom several thousand rounds down the pipe, without a burp! Still as accurate as when I bought it!

i like a good trigger on an accurate pistol. i bought a springfield range officers model .45 acp. this is a national match pistol with a 2.75 pound trigger. it is extremely accurate pistol and they are sold locally (black sheep of coeur d'alene, idaho) for about $900. it has adjustable sights and i feel that for the money you cannot find a better .45. look for the letters NM ahead of the serial number and that is the range officers national match grade pistol.

truckerwalt: You do realize sir, that the original post is almost three years old? No doubt by now the OP has secured the 1911 of his choosing.

But I'll agree that the Springer RO is indeed a very fine offering, especially for the asking price. :D
