Who has the strongest action?? Wby......Savage.......Remington......Cooper...............Kimber......
Sako.........Ruger ?? There are some I missed!!
Most upper end hi-velocity cartridges have max chamber pressure of 65000psi...............so what are actions tested to? To be safe sided by the manufacture? Are we as consumers allowed to know this? Or ask this?
Just a question for thought.

Ray: All factories that produce rifles must first test them with "proof loads" that are loaded far over the normal working pressures for any SAMMI cartridge. As such, every rifle has been fired and stamped with the proof marks you see, proving they withstood this "proof" testing.

I worked for a rifle maker here for a while, and we tested action strength by blowing up a few nice actions using a .280 Rem case full of Bullseye. When you know where they break, you can then engineer the appropriate changes in regard to structural integrity. My wife regulary purchases proof loads for a well known rifle manufacturer, and they're not sold to anyone except industry makers that are SAMMI registered.

I doubt if you'll ever find out which action is the strongest....there's just no way to prove it one way or another without total destruction.

Note: Have you seen the current email set of photos circulating of the guy who blew up the Savage 110.....owww....his hand is hamburger! (Handloading error, no fault of the rifle)

That Savage was built around smokeless powder. The problem was he overstoked it looking for more. I'm glad my adventurous side doesn't include 60,000+ pressures 3" from my face.

I've seen pics of the rifle but not of his hand.....

Thanks for the replys Guys!! Nope didn't see any pics of the Savage 110 with a stiff charge or the gus hand.
Had a guy here in Pa that was working on a 408 chy-tek. Have someone building the action for him!! He was test loads..........and ...........IT let go................He's alive I heard, his right hand is messed up. Launch a Nightforce scope thru the roof of his shooting room..................ouch !

Ray: It was the guy from MCR was it?

Ok I appreciate the replys and input.
I Have a 2nd ?..............On bolt actions are the bolts and recivers the same hardness? Or is one harder than the other!
Do manufactures harden the hole bolt or just harden the lugs?

Back in the late sixties a gun magazine ran a test on five rifles with overloaded
rounds. The Win, Rem, and Browning (FN Mauser back then) all blew on the first
round, the Weatherby went three, the Ruger stood five and was still intact, at that
point they quit shooting it. Not really pertinent to todays guns but interesting.

I think I remember that test. I think Ruger used the results in some way to advertise the strength of their castings. I usually load right around max. loads and it's nice to know the guns will take it some a little extra.
