I recently added a Ruger 1B in .204 as middle gun.(32 Hornady Blitz at 3800+)
Larger is .260 Remington with 100 HPFB at 3200+.
Smaller Rifle is Cooper 57 in .17 HMR.
There seemed to be a natural performance hole between these two for squirrels and pds. I think the .204 with a 32 grain Hornady Blitz at 3800 or so (26.5 10X and Fed 205M)seems to work admirably here. (R#1 I call the Hammer from Hades!)
For extreme range say over 700, I could use 7WSM.

Both scopes are made by US Optics. Top one is SN-3 6-30x58 on a 35 tube, quite old and no longer available, but near perfect resolution and clarity. No kiddin' you can count the hairs on a PD at three hundred yards. High res optics on it. FFP reticle is mil-dot
Bottom scope is current technology USO SN-3 3.2-17x44 on 30 mm tube. High quality tactical scope with 90 Click (EREK) knob. Standard optics on this one. FFP reticle is moa scale, same units as knobs. Some people question why tactical scope on .17HMR. If you are trying to hit squirrels at 125 yards you need all the help you can get for one shot kill. Custom pic rail on Cooper.

Thank you. I shoot a (among other guns) a .22 Hornet Kimber left hand and I use a 6.5 -20 Leupold so I know what you mean about being able to see up close. And at this time I use a 10x Leupold on the .17 HMR of which I have three.
