.308 Green Machine at 800+

Nothing fancy, same .308 Win & Leupold that I've been shooting for 14 years. A few barrels and one new stock later anyway... Went out to the range this morning. After a warmup at 300 yards, I dialed in 23 MOA of elevation & 2 MOA left windage. Went prone with the sling looped around my upper arm, held hard and cut loose. Sure is satisfying to hear the distant clang when the bullet strikes the gong out there a bit beyond 800 yards. Very satisfying...

The Green Machine .308, still at it after all these years:

With the newer 300 mag wiz bangs on the market these days it is easy to overlook the .308 Win.

However this weekend I witnessed a 300 yard shot on a large cow moose with a .308, broke a rib going in, complete pass through and broke another rib exiting. Lungs were destroyed and she trotted about 50 yards then collapsed.

I was pretty impressed as the carcass when taken to the butcher weighed 518 lbs (estimated she would have been over 1000 lbs on the hoof)

With premium bullets and a competent shooter I think the old .308 is a very capable round.

Nothing wrong with a .308, one of the most accurate cartridges out there IMHO. For hunting, if your rig shoots the Hornady Light Mag ammo accurately it definitly increases the effective range of the round.

My (30-06) Ruger M77 really likes the Hornady Light-Mag in the 180 grain round, it's a pretty good hammer with the punch of a typical factory 300 Win Mag round. Of course, the additional recoil and blast are all a part of the deal.

Guy way to go nice pics and rifle!! I weened my 1000 yard shooting at our club here in Pa on 308 Win with 175 Sierra MK's and it taught me a lot. Very nice setup you have.
Thanks for sharing and nice shooting.

Guy, very nice.

The boy is getting a new Marlin XS7 from the grand parents for Christmas this year in .308 Win. Hopefully he will have a few tags filled with it this time next year. Great youth round due to the mild recoil and is obviously capable of the longer shot when needed.

Good Job! I used to live in Clarkston WA across the snake river from Lewiston Id. I sure miss the open country I would like to return some day.

I've eyeballed that rifle since the first time you posted it some while back. Very nice, business like, and done properly. You just can't argue the merits of the .308W (7.62x51 NATO) or the M700 (M240) platform. For a time years back when I used the .30-06 and .270 exclusively, I more or less poo-poo'd the .308, thinking (no experience with it at that time) it was just a ".30-06 Short" Nothing could be farther from the truth. After two tours in RVN though, my mind was changed forever. Now I'll never be without one.

Here's one of my sons using his custom tactical .308 on one of our walkabouts in the desert, shooting at head-sized rocks at 600 yards that day (he's the one that makes the custom ghillies).

We usually just shoot Federal 168 or 175gr. Premium ammo, the same stuff our guys are using in theater at present for precision sniping. I'd like to get my hands on some of that LC Match stuff I had once but gone now. Some day I'll get around to adding a .308 die set to the collection.

I bet you heard the nice ring of that 800 yard gong a few times that day, eh? :D Nice.
