Picked up another Ruger Number One yesterday. I like it!

Congrats Guy! Another No. 1 in a very fine caliber to boot....lucky guy!

One of my good friends just got a pre '64 Win Safari Grade in .375 too....what's going on? Is everyone snapping up good elk calibers for some reason the rest of us don't know about, or did you just come across a good deal?

Regardless, congratulations on the new piece in a classic caliber.

I dunno why the .375... Have always been interested in the cartridge and when a good deal came up on this particular rifle along with dies, bullets and some loaded ammo, I jumped at it. If nothing else, it ought to make one heck of an elk & bear rifle...

Guy......Way to go! Congrads on the #1. Sure hope you get to use it this hunting season. A friend of mine has a one like yours in 45/70 caliber I have my eye on.

First range trip this morning. Wanted to sight-in the old 2-7x Redfield, get familiar with the rifle and run some loads across the chronograph. Had fun doing all three. Shot 24 rounds through it, with no ill effects on me. Big holes in the berm behind the targets though... Recoil was described to me as more of a "big push" than a sharp smack, and I'd have to agree. It's really not bad to shoot, some of that may be due to a good recoil pad.

300 gr Sierra, 75 gr H4350 = 2560 fps

260 gr Nosler Accubond, 76.5 H4350 = 2647 fps

Managed roughly 1.5 MOA groups with either load, from sitting.


Surprisingly compact rifle, about the size of my old .308 Browning BLR:


So far, so good. I think it will serve me well.

Very handsome rifles! Now with a .375 you have an excuse to plan an Africa trip or Brown bears in Alaska.

Yes.... It is truly a LOT more rifle than I can really justify for elk, black bear and mule deer... On the other hand, it will be fun even on them!

Africa... Spendy proposition, still it could be done.

Alaska... I get up there every few years, fly fishing the salmon run. Almost always see bears, really big bears... I think the .375 would be perfect there. Another really expensive proposition...

Still, I can dream, and perhaps one of these days I'll hunt one or both of those places. Meanwhile the elk, bear and mule deer had better look out!

Guy.........Do you have post over on the 6mmBR forum with your 375? You have a great group using Nosler 260 AB's

Yes, those 260 gr Accubonds turned out to be amazingly accurate from this rifle. However, I'm about out of 'em and need to order some more.

Took the rifle on a bear hunt, saw bears, but didn't get a shot opportunity with it. Perhaps later this season something worthwhile will get in the way of one of those bullets.
