Im thinking about turning my bolt action .223 rem into a .223AI. I have an ar-15 in 223 so I figured why not try the AI. What are the pros and cons of this cartridge? If I have read correctly I should just have rechamber my bolt action? Any help would be appreciated.

Easy to do, especially on a Savage because you can set your headspace with the barrel nut.

Start off with the LEE 223 AI dies....they work.

Pros of 223 AI:

8 to 14% more speed
You have probably trimmed your last piece of brass (the 40 degree shoulder does not allow much brass stretch).
Fireforming - don't bother - just go shoot 223 rounds in your 223 AI chamber - it WILL be accurate and you fireform as you shoot.
3300 fps with a 68/69 gr bullet in a 1:9 twist factory Savage barrel rechambered to AI with H4895 is rather fun.

Cons:

If you have ONE rifle in 223 AI, you will want another :)

If you buy a barrel, go with a 1:8 twist - allows you to shoot everything from 40 gr to 80 grain bullets. Don't be afraid to shoot 50/52/53/55 gr bullets in a 1:8 twist - bullets will actually come apart when shooting prairie dogs.

I have a howa 1500. But was considering a rem 700 for a donor action.

Aftermarket barrel nuts for Remington rifles are available as well.
