I was sighting in a rifle at the range yesterday when this happened:
Its factory loaded Federal premium .308 Win Match 168gr Boat-Tail hollow point. I have fired thousands of these rounds and never seen that happen. Had my gunsmith check out the rifle and it is fine. Anyone else ever had this happen from premium ammo?

Contact Federal with the lot number for replacement/compensation. Looks to be a case defect, but let them sort it out. Be glad your chamber did not get any gas cutting.

Re: Blown case!
Looks like you lucked out, in a weird sort of way. Surprised the rifle was not damaged. We bought a box of Hornaday Superformance ammo last year for my youngest's new deer rifle. It was the only way to get brass fast enough to get reduced loads worked up for him. Three pieces split the necks on the initial firing. He now has a box of shiny, new Nosler brass for this Fall.

Well they say that it was caused by stress corrosion.

Is the ammo old?
I see 2 blown-out area's, that looks like you missed getting hurt, count your blessings.

Have you heard anything back from Federal yet ? Seems like enough time, if they are at all interested. Bill KGreat White North wrote:I have sent them an email. I'm a firm believer in the theory that if it bleeds, I can kill it.
