What can anyone tell me about the 225win.

Post by Va varminter »

I saw a used mod. 70 at a local shop today. Walnut stock and bull barrel. The wood had some marks but the metal was in good shape. It came with a VXII 6-18 w/OA. Price was $1199. First off, I don't know anything about the caliber. Second, I don't know if that price is about right or not. Any info. would be most helpful.

Around my parts that is a $400 scope. Depending on the rings & mounts you could be around another $70- $100 if they are good ones. That puts the rifle in the $650-$700 range in my neck of the woods. The only 225Win I could find in my 28th Edition of Blue Book Gun Values shows $550 for a 100% rifle. It also shows it was made between 1964 & 1980. HTH

So maybe I should try and haggle him down to $950-$1000. It would make a great walking varminter. My current is a savage 12fv. HAH(heavy as heck)

You may have trouble finding .225 Win brass. It may be able to be formed from 30-30 Win and turn down the rim, dunno for sure, but check out brass availability before you plunk down your cash...... :chin:

Already checked on brass. About $26 for 50 from midway. How can I tell what to look for if I decided to scope the barrel? I think it is a fairly old gun. Maybe as much as 30+ years. What do I want to look for from a shot out tube?

I always thought that would be an unusual cartridge to have, particularly if you don't a have a 22-250. If you don't have prairie dogs or some type of ground squirrels in bulk in your area, it probably rode in the truck more that it was shot. It sounds like an interesting find to me!!
Take a kid to the range, both of you will be glad you did. remy3424
