Ruger Model 77

To all,

I have a Ruger Model 77 in 30-06 with the tang safety. Does anyone know if the Ruger Model 77MkII stocks will work with this rifle (safety is up on the bolt), or is there some modifications involved?

Jim: I've always been told that the original M77 stocks won't work with the newer M77 MK-II. Sort of the same deal with pre-'64 Winchesters and the post '64 models....stocks won't interchange there either. I've never tried to fit one to the other, it's just what's been passed around seemingly forever.

But I'd guess that being it's made of wood, it could probably be made to fit in a pinch with the aid of your Dremel tool. The MK-II safety would be one area I'd imagine much wood would need to be removed. If you put a newer MK-II into the old stock, you'd have some issues with the old tang safety area. Either way, you'd be better off with a stock inletted specifically for that barreled action. JMO

Thanks Rick. I'll keep looking for an aftermarket stock, they selection isn't that great but nonetheless, I really like the rifle.

The old rifles won't fit the new stocks, there are a BUNCH of differences in the actions. The older rifles will hold 5 30/06s down in the mag, the newer (Mk II and later) will only hold four, the older stock is a lot deeper for the deeper magazines. Then, there's the tang area, as Rick has already alluded to. The angled forearm screw is pretty close to the same, with probable differences due to the shorter magazines in the new ones, too.

There are probably some stocks out there to fit, depending on whether you want wood or synthetic. I know for sure Bell and Carlson made stocks for the older 77s, I had one! McMillan also does them, for both new and old, and there are probably others. That angled screw makes aftermarket things harder to find, though.

I've pretty decided to keep it in the stock I have now, I'll just get her bedded. I do like the thought of 5+1 30.06 cartridges though.
