204 & Son's first hunt

Post by BLOK »

Took my son this weekend to hunt his first deer with his new 204Howa. We searched for a large impala as there is extremely large ones on the particular farm. After stalking three diffrent ones without sucess I decided to try another part with thicker bush that alwas holds a few good rams.

While slowly crawling to the bush a springbuck ram moved infront of us. As that was the second species on my sons list and this was an eceptional big ram he decided that he would rather attempt te springbuck. The ram was about 100yards away and I agreed, set the sticks up and made him comfortable to take the shot. He gave it a perfect heart shot and the ram fell down.

Meat damage was a bit to mutch but 32 and 45g Hornadys are all that are available locally so till someone starts importing stronger bullets it shoul do for now.

Getting one for the kid to drop, awesome! Are those tsetse flies on the head of the springbok in the one picture? I've read a lot of old stories about how much of a pain in the rear they are.

Good times!
I remember shooting with my old man when I was a junior. Never got to take a shot myself though - but that's another story.
He's a lucky lad to have abundant trophies to hunt, and a Dad with the patience and time to teach.

WY- The tsetse fly has been eradicated from southern Africa.
When I worked as an apprentice PH in Tanzania, we had lots of problems with the flies. The area where they bite you, swells up, and itches like nothing else! We used to wear Bug Tamer suits, and it seemed to help a bit.
