Busman's Holiday

After guiding sagerat hunters for several weeks, I finally got out to shoot a few rockchucks on my own. I wasn't finding many 'chucks in our usual spots so I decided to look in an area Verminator2 and I had seen some sign while calling bobcat last winter. Turned out to have a huntable number so I took a few shooting my Cooper Varminter .204.

The first two were at 203 yards, the third at 187, I missed a couple of shots at 259 in the ten mph crosswind then connected on this 'chuck at 387 with a full value crosswind holding on the second windage mark on my Leupold VH reticle. It jumped off the rock it was laying on and I couldn't tell whether it was dead for sure so I put a second one in him at the same distance. When I got there, the evidence of the first hit was obvious. It wasn't my best showing having several misses mixed in but the wind was a little challenging. Need to get after some more. I'm getting the Fever!

There were 14 rockchucks in the FOV of my 10X42 binocs here. The digital zoom messed up the focus a little but you can see most of them. Unfortunately, I hadn't talked to the landowner about hunting this spot and let them pass.

I hope you all have a good summer of shooting! Take care and God bless.

Shooting those rockchucks is really a ball! The Idaho Varmint Hunters went on our first annual Rockchuck Rendezvous last weekend. It was for members and their families. We really enjoyed ourselves. The longest shot was 460 yds. with a .22/250 and the heaviest chuck was 10.2 lbs. with a .204. There were lots of young ones and several of them did some amazing acrobatics.

Way to go Tim! Glad you were able to finally get out for some fun with your rifle. Looks like you stumbled into the rock chuck mother loade too. That spot should give some good shooting for quite a while.......be sure to leave some for seed. ;)

Thanks for sharing, and tell Verm2 "hi" from the EORFS crew. :D Maybe we'll see you guys over there next year.
