I've been trying without any luck to get something to come in. I've had coyotes serenade back to me, but haven't even had one show itself. Tonight I ran up just outside of town to a buddy's place. He said he had seen a coyote up there earlier in the winter. Unfortunately I didn't get to his place until 6:00 and it gets too dark to shoot at around 6:40ish. So I had to really hoof it up to a big hill behind his place. I wanted to be higher up on it but I was losing precious time. So, I plopped the Primos Alpha Dogg down behind a sage bush, then moved off it a ways and up the hill a little more. I could see down a nice gully and had a nice open field to try to coax em out into. So, I started with a coyote interegation howl. Nada, zip. Usually that will get any coyote in the area to call back. I played it one more time, (actually Randy Anderson did cuz it's one of his preprogrammed hunts). Again, nothing. Well, then it launched into a jack rabbit in distress. It wasn't 2 minutes and I had this dude run right past my left side on an oblique angle right to the caller he got about 20 feet away from it, spun and ran back up the hill. So I jumped up and barked at him to stop him. He stopped, I shot, he dropped. Unfortunately, he was only 67 yards away and the 39gr Sierra left a little bigger exit than I wanted. Maybe I should have let him get out there a little farther? What a kick in the pants though! Man is that fun!!

Gets the heart beating doesn't it!
From a recent post, I gather foxes are a little rare in the states.
We usually have an abundance of them in farming country in Oz.
It's almost overwhelming when the young pups don't realise the danger they face and pretty much run right up to you. Then it's GO time. If you don't act quick they're gone again.
You got it right though - a little bark or yell to pull him up, then try to steady the reticle in under a second while your heart makes it dance :D
Fun fun. Can't wait til mating season.
Congrats mate
