Still havn't bought a new 204R since selling my 204 ruger N1 varmint. Would anyone like to comment on the pros and cons of some of the other 20s when compared to the 204R. Thanks, Kenbro. :?:

Ken, one thing to consider is if you want factory ammo available for your new offering. If I was going to make up a new .20 cal rifle right now, it would probably be a 20 VarTarg. Fast, very efficient, and very accurate in most rifles. Todd Kindler is still trying to talk me into building one after three years.

The "20 dasher" has peaked my interest. 1in 9 twist pushing a 55 gr berger at 3750. Should have some good long range potential.

The 20 VarTarg and the Tactical 20 are both excellent cartridges in 20 caliber. And they are different enough from each other that one of each is warranted in any gun safe. Kinda' like the 17 Mach IV (17 Rem FB)/17 Remington comparison. The 20 VT is built off the 221 FB case and the Tac 20 uses 223 cartridge cases with a little bit longer neck and the case shoulder pushed back a bit and reformed to 30 degrees. Both are Todd Kindler contributions to the 20 caliber world.

Or you could go with the "new, recently invented" Practical 20 which is the 223 case necked down with no other alterations. Back in the mid 1980's the Practical 20 was called the 5mm-223.....long before it was "recently invented"...

Another very efficient 20 caliber cartridge is the 20 TNT which is the 17 Remingon necked up to 20 caliber. It was an early TK/Douglas barrel design.

Don't forget the 5/35SMC. Case availability is a big question though.

Been thinking about a 20-250 for a while now with a fast twist. Your input on this wildcat?

20-250: Some late issues of Small Caliber News had some very good articles on the 20-250, and performance was very favorable in all regards. Seems like a very good, fast caliber with excellent ballistics and brass availability, not to mention easy to form.

Why don't we come up with our own 20 cal. cartridge.
I vote to use the 220 Swift case.

Hotshot: If you do, plan on reducing body taper and increasing the shoulder angle a la Ackley. A magnificent overbore chuck nightmare!

You might try "Googling" 20 Wolfer (20-250) and 20 Super Wolfer (20-250 AI) and see what shows up. The cartridge - both the regular and the AI version - has been around for quite a few years....a lack of adequate bullets has been its biggest problem.

Thanks to all for the replies and comments. When i asked the question"which 20 cal" iwas thinking of something with similar performance to the 204R,where you can see the action through the 'scope. Also, if it wouldn't shoot factory ammo as Rick mentioned, a case that needed a minimum amount of forming would be a bonus. If i wanted to use bullets heavier than 40gr. i would get my '250 out. I like the look of short, fat bottle shaped cases, but don't know if they are as good as long thin cases? Does the shape of the case make any difference to the ballistics? Thanks again, Ken.

Some good info on the dasher here. Just type in dasher in the search menu and enjoy.
