A friend and I just attended the Rock Chuck Derby, in Bliss, Idaho, held this weekend, April 24 to April 26.

You can check it out at rockchuckderby.com.

The wind howled on Saturday, with gusts probably up to 30 mph. On Sunday, it was worse, at probably up to 40 or 45 mph on hilltops. Wind doping becomes a critical skill.

My friend was shooting his .204 Cooper Varminter. He went about 3 for 5, even in the wind, before his firing pin broke, in a freak situation. So he shifted to his Smith & Wesson AR in .223, which he shot very well, adding two candidates on Sunday, the longest at 260 yards in the stiff crosswind. He maintains he needed about 25 inches of windage on his third or fourth shot to flip the varmint off the rock.

I shot the largest of our two man team, at 11.5 lbs. or so, at 270 yards, but it was mostly with the wind. I was shooting a Tikka 595 in .223, with 40 grain Fiocchi V-Maxes. This ammo seems to shoot very well in my rifle. Cabela's had it on special at $10.99 per 20 a month or so ago.

I want to thank Outlaws and Angels Bar & Grill in Bliss, Idaho, for sponsoring this event. It is a fundraiser, in honor of Hannah Bates, who died of cancer in February, 2008. This young woman of 20 years had a heart of love, but was tough as they ever come!! Hannah played sports with a prosthesis leg as she fought cancer. Outlaws and Angels raised $25,000 for education in 2008 in this event, and perhaps this year will be even better! I hope Hannah was watching, as we honored her determination, love, and grit!
