Aim point for 250 yd shot from an elevated position?

Post by sevensandeights »

I hunt woodchucks in northwest PA farm country. I hunt fields and pastures with rolling fields. I usually set-up on the top of a hill and shoot the fields and ditches below. The hills are anywhere from 30 -100 feet high and my typical shot is 150-250 yards. Occasionally I get a 300-350 yard shot.

Looking for advice on what my aim point should be when shooting from an elevated position. My scope is zeroed at 100yds and I'm shooting factory 32grain Hornady's. The ballistics on the box are as follows:

100yds - 0.6" high
200yds - 0
300 yds - 4.1" low

If by elevated position, you mean uphill or downhill shots. You will want to hold slightly lower of your aim point. Bill K :)

if you want to shoot that distance i would recommend a range finder and u need to know your bullet speed rarely will the bullets be doing boxed speeds or u can measure those distances and shoot a target aiming a t a bullseye and measure the drop but its very hard to judge hold over it better to dial in moa on a scope turret best of luck bazz

Take a day off, (from hunting) set up , and place targets out there at expected distances. Whack 'em, measure and record. Simple an stinkin' fun!

You can probably tell I'm a low budget guy, lol!!

That may be low budget, however, the results would be incontrovertible with a given load and firearm. Seems anymore that we so often forget that the simplest solution can also be the best solution :) .
