remington 700 vtr .204 recoil

Post by ifldned »

I'm new to this forum and would like your opinions and experience with the remington vtr 700 in .204.
I'm primarily interested in the amount of recoil to expect shooting the light 32 gr. bullets and even the heavier 40gr bullet. I want to know if I can see the bullet impact the squirrel at 200 yards with a 10x scope? And if so how high a power of scope can I expect to see the impact with before it recoils off the target? The Remington VTR has a built in muzzle brake. I expect to be shooting the 32 gr. bullet.
thanks, ifldned

ifldned,
I don't have a VTR but, I have shot one a few times. I do not believe the recoil will cause you to lose your' sight picture with either bullet. Not sure why Remmy even put a brake on it. However, the VTR is quite an ear ringer because of it!

My son has a VTR and the recoil isn't bad at all. I would have to agree with RAMOS, it really is an ear ringer.

thanks for your insight. I can put up with the ear ringing, I wear inner and outer ear protection when I shoot. I am mostly concerned about seeing the impact of my shot. My idea of of low recoil is no recoil. I think the extra noise of the Remington VTR muzzle brake means that it is working. Thank you again for your experience and insight.

i own a 700 VTR and it is by far my favorite gun. the recoil is nothing. im able to keep my eye on the glass the whole time. and for those longer shots you'll be able to see impact and even vapor trail sometimes.

RedTwo, remington vtr 700 .204
What kind of groups are you getting at 100 yards with factory ammo? If you reload I'd like to know the kind of groups you are getting also. I'd like to shoot 2.5 inch groups at 300 yards. I figure that might translate in .5 inch or just under at 100 yards. I'm open to all opinions. I realize a Remington 700 vtr in .204 is not a custom benchrest rifle. What would be realistic expectations? I've never shot squirrels at over 200 yards and I use benchrest 22lrs for that. I'm going to a .204 to eliminate the possiblity of ricochet , something I'm paranoid about. Also did you have to do any extensive tuning ? ifldned
