CFE223 range report (finally)

After having a pound of CFE223 sitting on my bench for over a month I was finally able to get to the range this morning, and it was well worth the wait. I used new Win brass, Rem 7 1/2 primers and 40.0 gr Vmaxs with a COL of 2.306. I started at 26.2 gr and went up to 28.5 gr. The best 5 shot group was .382" using 28.5 gr, the next best was .448" using 27.9 gr. Not quite up to the groups I can get with R10X or 8208XBR, but definately worth further load development. I haven't picked up a chrono yet so I don't know what velocity I'm getting.

Nothing wrong with that group.. It is noteworthy, I think, to mention there is a pretty good article in the latest Guns and Ammo mag on the cleaning ability of CFE223, if anyone is interested.. Bill K

Bill K, you've got my ear. Can you paraphrase the "cleaning" thing without violating a copywrite?

From what I have read CFE= copper fouling eliminator. Supposed to really help in the cleaning of the barrel. I also read an article that said Hodgdon was going to be incorporating this in more of their powders in the future. Sorry cant remember where I read this stuff. There is reload data for the powder on the Hodgdon website. I printed out some data for a friend the other day.

I checked out Guns & Ammos web site and did a search for CFE 223. Nothing came up. Guess I'll have to pay for the magazine.

The "Cleaning" part means that copper build up is less. They show photos of some barrels and even one that was just cleaned up (of copper wash) by shooting loads with the new powder, down the tube.. In other words copper wash is not supposed to build up and/or be taken out of the barrel, with the use of this powder. Remember there are other powders that have or do use the same or simular ingrediant to keep copper wash/build up down. Some Win and some Alliant brands for some. Bill K

Bill: No, this is the yearly magazine put out by Shooting Times and Hodgdon:

One of the articles is interesting too, a 6mm wildcat based on the 204 Ruger case....... :chin:

This edition has 17FB (17 Mach IV) loads, 22 K-Hornet, and LOTS of 204 Ruger data. :D

Okay,I have that one. I did mention that magazine along with the Load Data site, for the guy, so he should be covered when he locates either or both of those items... I like the magazine they put out and look for it every year. When they first put it out, they said they did not know how it would go over. I guess it did super and much better than they every thought.. Bill K

I read that article and wasn't surprised that they gave a glowing review of their own powder. It's worth a shot but as mentioned it's been done before.

Rick.... I enjoyed the 6mm-204 story. (Liked that Blue eye chuck) Sounds like a interesting caliber/combo. But I am not going there.. I like the 204 and 20VT just fine. When I step up from there it will be one of my 223's or 22-250.. Smile, smile. Bill K

Hi All, Fairly new here. I have been trying to get a bit more speed out of the Weatherby 204R I have got due to its 20 inch barrel. The CFE223 powder seemed the way to go. I loaded my Ar15 in 223Rem with 24inch barrel with it as well to compare with my usual Benchmark 2. The AR with CFE223 hit a sweet spot at 27.0gr behind a 55gr VMax Hornady case and a Rem 7.5, for 3/8inch and 3228fps. Against Benchmark with 25.2gr gives 1/2inch at 3260fps. The AR has a SS barrel and took ages to get the black out of it!! This may be because it loosened the stuff in the barrel that stayed in from previous cleans??? The 204 has given 3454fps from 26gr Benchmark behind 39SBK Wincase CCi450 for 3/8inch, The CFE 223 with 29gr behind same came up with 3565, 3536, 3527 3/8inch. With 32gr VMax with 28gr Benchmark 2 behind it and a Win case Rem 7.5 gave 5/8inch and 3820, 3875,3809,compared with30.9gr CFE223 Win Case Rem 7.5 gave just 1/2 inch and 3853, 3842, 3864. the Weatherby has a blued barrel and cleaned sweet?? All Shots at 100 yards light breeze warm day. I tried AR2219 and was real slow. Hope this is of interest had a lot of fun with my new Chrono. Den
