Hornady 25gn bullets for the .204Ruger

AS title, has anyone any info or tried these yet?

Alan....to the best of our knowledge here, Hornady does not make a .20 caliber 25gr bullet, only 32, 40 and 45. They do however make the excellent .17 caliber 25gr V-Max. If they did make such a bullet in .20 caliber, it would have such a low B.C. as to be only good for about 200 yards at best due to the extreme short overall length.

Do you know something we don't?

New From Hornady

Hornady has just launched three new items into the UK.
First, a 25gn 204 Ruger,which could see this tiny .20cal centrefire zipping along at 4200fps.

Second, a 123gn A-MAX load in 6.5 Grendel.

Finally, a 90gn 25.06,which we have clocked at 3,300fps.

Humm, maybe this is something only intended for export to the UK. Dunno, but we don't have any 25gr .204" bullets available here that I'm aware of. Nothing on Hornady's website either. Do you happen to know the B.C. of this bullet? Seems it could not be much over .150 or thereabouts....fast yes, but about worthless for anything past 300 yards.

Looks like you fellows over the pond will be dynamiting those lil foxes with this one at 4,200 fps!

Late Edit: I just saw on the Hornady website that they are offering a 24gr 204 Ruger offering, no mention of B.C. or anything else...yet.

I suppose eventually the .204" 24gr bullet will be available as a component. This might be pretty slick in smaller cases like the 20 VarTarg with less internal volume than the 204R. Time will tell eh? Thanks for the heads-up Alan.

I did ring Edgar Bros today and they were very unsure of this,but are going to send the lastest Hornady catalogue.

The 24 grain Hornady NTX (Non-Toxic, i.e. lead free) is listed as available on MidwayUSA. Here is the description:

The BC is quite high for such a light bullet (I'm sure due to the fact that it is lead free, therefore longer and sleeker). A good choice for the VarTarg? I might just have to find out

I shot the 24 grain Hornady NTX in my M77 mkII using benchmark with great results

i didn't realise that the new 25gn (or 24gn) was a complete round.

It's a lower BC than listed by Neil. Still pretty good considering Barne's 26 is only a .131 BC and it's a long one also.

I'm glad Hornady is still coming out with new bullets for the .204 caliber rifles. That sounds like an interesting bullet for .204 calibers that don't have much case capacity, but at $1.38 per round retail price, it definitely won't be a round I try in my .204 Rugers. The 4,400 fps muzzle velocity sounds pretty peppy, but according to their charts, it out of gas very quickly as would be expected for a bullet with such a low .170 BC, etc. I'll stick to my 39 gr. Sierras and 40 gr. V-Max bullets.

I wonder how this little bullet will fare on thin-skinned animals like fox?

Silverfox, I think the 24/25gn would best be suited for small mammals like rabbits,etc,not sure about foxes though.I've been using Hornady 32gn V-Max with excellent results,best rabbit 416yards,but,mostly stay around the 250 yard mark.
I've loaded 20 rounds with Hornady 40gn V-Max,not sure of the results yet,not had chance to get out with them,i've heard reports that the 40gns may not like a 1 in 12 twist,that's what my Cz Varmint has.
Still,trial and error,it's a small price to pay just to try.

alan108--You could be surprised and find that your 1 in 12 twist barrel likes the 40 gr. V-Max. Then again, maybe it won't My Savage 12VLP in .204 Ruger with the 1 in 12 twist factory barrel didn't seem to like either the 40 gr. V-Max or the 40 gr. VLD Bergers (they don't make that bullet any longer), but it shoots the 40 gr. Nosler BT just fine

It only costs you a few bullets, some powder and primers to find out.

Just been on Hornady site they say Bal. Co for 25 grn is .170 not .195
