I would like to know high the temperature gets went the explosion occurs inside the barrel?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deflagration

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Combustion

there are several factors that would depend on. available oxygen or oxidizer. material combusting what it is made of. pressure. amount of material or fuel. given that cellulose is wood i would say start at 451 f.

i have known it to ignite aluminum powder. 1200f . so a guess would be 2000f

Thanks I was hoping 800c or 1500f. Had an idea for a barrel. Here is the link http://www.ultrahardmaterials.com/

forgot to say it is a very quick burn and not an actual detonation hence the deflagr link. the best i could do for you is an educated guess. but i do not follow why you would want this material to make a barrel with ? are you thinking it may last longer ? when i saw the tv add for that zircuonium sp? knife i thought that might have worked. tensile strength is what you should be concerned with. ceramics shatter like glass. and yet they are hard.

if you had thermal efficiency in mind that may be good for a engine that will use that heat for the next combustion but bad for firearms where the idea is to get rid of the heat as fast as possible. noting that too much heat for an engine is also not good eighter.

i still do not follow why that temp ?

Yes for lasting longer.

But I forgot that well ceramics will shatter.

As for you asking about the temp. Well a ceramic barrel wrap in carbon fiber is what I had in mind. There is very few carbon wrap barrels manufacturer. By using ceramic, which will not aborb heat, I could then use regular carbon fiber to stiffen the barrel.

Another issue is the need to use a diamond reamer.

Well got to find something else. Thanks 204cat

I think you're WAY too low. Unconfined gunpowder burns at better than 2700°C. Confine it and light it and it will get much hotter than that. Plain air raised to 60,000 psi probably would be hotter than what you're thinking. (can't find a formula at the moment to check)

that formula she is hiding. agree with that the figure maybe too low. this is how i arrived at that number.

propellent is ignited for a fraction of a second to complete the burn. after ten shots barrel is too hot to touch assumed 200 f . it would take something ten times hotter to heat that barrel to the too hot to touch temp. thus 2000 f . like putting a blow torch at the end of the barrel.

i did find this. get a mop be for clicking link. when i saw the bomb calorimeter excessive salivating followed.

maybe i saved a life or more ? i do not know ?

enjoy and stay well.

If it is good for a rotary engine... http://ceramicrotaryengines.com/ why not a barrel. Too bad! ;)

by retaining the heat from the first shot with ceramic material to the second shot you greatly change the poi . might as well be using a scatter gun at that point. interesting article .

It shouldn't be too long before someone comes up with a composite barrel that's lighter and more durable than steel, plus it'll have harmonic properties to allow for vibration tuning. Composites is a field that's expanding at the speed of light. At first they'll be as expensive as Iranian caviar, of course, but eventually the economy of scale will catch up and they'll start putting them on the cut-rate Weatherbys they sell at Wally World.
