Twist refers to how many inches a bullet must travel in the bore to complete 1 (one) revolution. A 9 twist barrel will have the bullet travel 9" to complete 1 revolution. A 14 twist means the bullet must travel 14". The lower the number, ( 9 vs. 14) the faster the twist. All bullets have a recommended twist rate for best results. Length and weight of the bullet all go into the formula to determine the best twist rate.

Hope this helps.

it does thanks, so heavier bullets do better with more twists?

As a general rule yes, however as Cover Dog mentioned there are other factors. Bullet shape, bearing surface etc. The speed of the bullet also has a direct impact on stability of the bullet in a given twist. In other words some twists with a certain bullet require that it be launched at a higher velocity to achieve stability. Heavier bullets do need a faster twist than lighter bullets. If your twist is on the edge of stabilizing your bullet, sometimes increasing your bullets velocity will take care of the issue.

I don't believe the weight of the bullet has anything to do with it...other than the fact that in a given diameter longer bullets will generally weigh more.

The Greenhill formula developed in the 19th century for determining optimum twist rate for bullets does not include "weight" in the calculation.......

Just FWIW.....

If you are confused about this weight and length thing just ask BCB. I guarantee he knows and I think he would be happy to explain.
