Redding Type S Match Die Question and PROBLEM!!

Post by FireBallGuy »

Got these guys home today, tore them apart and cleaned them popped them in my press and was ready to get BUSY! Miracle of miracles.....the first case through the die gets stuck!?! This is not a big problem but what is of concern is I set up the seater as directed and it appears that I had to run it up to the middle of the #3 on the vertical scale to get my proper seating depth for BK's. Is this normal? Going to have to turn it out even farther for the burgers and I am not sure how much more room I have to turn this thing out......did I do something wrong HERE???? And for those who might ask.....YES.....I did lube the case with imperial sizing wax as per usual. Having issues with the instructions on how to reset the seater to "0" without messing up the settings already dialed in. It feels like the set screw on the micrometer will not move. I am of the impression that you would hold onto the knob, back off the screw and then you can reset the dial to zero.....HELP!!!!!!!

Assuming stuck case with FL die?
After cleaning and drying new FL dies I usually apply a little sizing wax inside before using. I have noticed also that Imperial takes a few pieces of lubed brass to start "running right" in some FL dies. Not all but some.

This is something I've never paid attention too but I think you'd need to screw the micrometer in further for the 40 Bergs than the 39's.
The Berg has a shorter bearing surface and longer ogive. Me thinks you'd need to go deeper.

Hafta admit I've never read the instructions or tried to set the micrometer for zero. I go off my notes. If the first is too short its a fouler anyway.
You can always call Redding if there is a problem.

Dang, Now you need a stuck case remover tap remover. Not sure I ever saw one of those

If its any consolation I've jammed a 308 Win in a Hornady die. Drilled and tapped it and stripped the threads trying to get it out.
Ended up throwing it in the garbage and learned a lesson. If it don't feel right going in stop and back it out add lube.

Did you get the case out?
I'll throw away a Hornady die but a Redding I'll get fixed. ;)
